BEFORE you go out, make sure your camera settings are where you want them to be, all the settings that can be made by accidentally turning dials and pushing buttons. Thumbs and fingers can move things without us even knowing it, or you forgot to put a setting back after making a change on a shot. Happens to me all the time so I post this reminder for myself.
Been guilty of not doing this a few times myself.
That’s a great tip. These modern cameras have a myriad of settings, that is good, but a range of various options that is a potential nightmare especially if one has trouble learning what does what! The Nikon 750 which is my camera is precisely a good example!

AMEN! And during shooting too... in manual with a Nikon D500... “How in the world did that get turned to that setting?”
Great advice. I always check my first few shots to be sure I'm getting what I want.

My favorite example is the time I was shooting in manual mode, using studio flashes, also in manual mode, and scratching my head wondering why every shot was a different exposure. Auto-bracketing was turned on.
Most cameras have presets now. On my Canon you get c1, c2, c3. For c1 I set the everything the way i like it for outdoor walking around, then register the setting in c1, so a twist of the dial to c1 and it remembers everything and puts it back where I wanted it. For c2 I set for indoor no flash, including flicker detection. C3 is manual starting at base ISO, f5.6, 1/125.
Excellent advice! I try to practice that because I haEA messed up a few times. Exposure compensation and ISO are one I tend to forget to reset.
Yes. Sad, but true. We are our own worst enemies.
And then the most simple check - Battery Level!
