As the light dimmed I set up a single flash with remote trigger. There are two feeders...I directed the flash between them. The total DOF is about 3/4".

Beautiful work

Very nice. #1 is my favorite because of the colors demonstrated. Did you use autofocus or pre focus with switch to manual? Your Sony has a fast autofocus at that range, right? I have a very difficult time autofocusing on hummers, especially in dim light like you were in.

Hummers are a difficult subject due to their size, speed and agility. They just seem to come out of nowhere and show up at the feeders. Its difficult to stay focused because of the dead time between visits.

I try to keep the feeder in focus to minimize focus distance. A fast focusing camera/lens combination is helpful. I plug up all the feeder ports but one on each feeder to force the bird to feed in a limited area.

They will drink for a second or two, then back off a few inches, reverse direction and feed again. This will repeat several times before they fly away. Occasionally they will repeat this many times. The trick is to catch them off the feeder when reversing direction.

It takes practice...repeating the same thing over and over expecting different results is not insanity...you actually get better that way.

Excellent shots. How did the humming birds react to the flash?

The flash was set at 1/4 power so it was quick. If it bothered them I didn't notice it. I suspect its not any different than with people...nobody really likes it but it tolerable.
