Trip to Evansville, IN

I am headed back to Evansville in July for a reunion (haven't been back in over 25 years) and I am looking for the best places - iconic or otherwise - to shoot. Has anyone been there and photographed the city recently and if so, what do you recommend?

Thank you so much for your input!

I know the question is about Evansville. But, I've never actually been there. The last time I was traveling from Louisville to St Louis, I stopped off at Vincennes for sunset pictures of their courthouse. If I had more time in the area, I would have tried sunrise or sunset pictures of The George Rogers Clark National Historical Park Rotunda. Another back home to Indiana idea that might be near your route is the original statehouse in Corydon. Looking online, I certainly would visit the Vanderburgh County Superior Courthouse, in Evansville.

Evansville resident here!!!

Not sure what type of photos you area after. If it is architecture, there is the old bus station (art deco) that has been converted to a restaurant but kept much of the art deco flavor, A block away is the old post office, and about 3 blocks is the old courthouse. All are pretty cool architecturally.

LST 325 is out at marina point, it is a working WWII landing craft with other vintage items. Also the museum has some older RR cars/engines on display.

The river front has suffered some flood damage this year, but should be up again by July.

Bosse Field, the third oldest operating baseball stadium in the US should be in full swing with the Evansville Otters in mid-season

The Evansville Zoo offers much in flora and fauna, It is the largest zoo in Indiana.

If wildlife is your hot spot, Bluegrass FWA is 9 miles out of town, and there are dozens of small hidden gems that I could share with you for "urban" wildlife.

PM if you have questions.

Thanks so much...what about the old train yard? I have seen a post where that is a good spot, but can't find anything else on it....looks like it is on the west side(Howell Yard maybe?) I am primarily interested in architectural locations and good blue hour locations. I was born and raise there, but haven't really been back since my parents passed in 2002. And wasn't into photography as a profession until 2012.

Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it.

I'm another Evansville resident. I think a previous responder covered many of the good spots. Sometime back, another "Hog" posted a link to a very cool website: https://www.shothotspot.com/
Type in Evansville Indiana, and it'll come up with places and ideas to shoot, including #1: Graffiti Train Yard

Downtown near the Riverfront on 1st Street is the Reitz Home, but no photos allowed inside. Still, if you walk along the street a few blocks, there are many dozens of gorgeous Victorian-era homes. This is a pleasant walking tour, and the gardens should be gorgeous. (Remember though, Evansville isn't the surface of the sun in July, but you can sure see it from here! The heat and humidity in July will be certainly present and accounted for! )

Unfortunately, you'll miss the Shriner's Festival and air show in late June. If interested in small trips, Vincennes, Indiana, just an hour to the north, is a good spot - they have the George Rogers Clark Memorial (Revolutionary War), and a very nice 2nd World War museum with many static displays.

To the west is New Harmony, an hour away, which is a photographer's dream. Beautiful place to capture some historic buildings.

Last, if your up for a couple of hour drive, you could head over the Wabash to Garden of the Gods in Shawnee National Park, in Southern Illinois (not the one in Colorado!) After visiting this gorgeous place, take a jaunt south to Cave in Rock, Illinois and cross the Ohio River on the Ferry that operates there daily - for free. Then come up through Western Kentucky to Henderson, KY, over the twin bridges, and back to E-ville. Fun drive, but it is a day trip

Safe Journeys!

Michael

In 2013 I went back to Marion and Ft. Wayne, Indiana for a family reunion. One of my cousins took us to Nashville in Brown County. That cousin lived south of Indianapolis and it was a day trip. Might be a little longer from Evansville. Lots of interesting buildings. It is in the hills, so might be cooler in July.

Many years ago, my wife went to a conference in Evansville. I drove her down there, then we spent fascinating hours at Angel Mounds Park in the area before I left her off for the week. I also was interested in the old passenger train station there, but I don't believe it is there anymore.
