The D5300 can do the job for you but understand IMHO the lens is what makes the picture, the camera just keeps it for later.
(I'll always remember being deep in a French pig boat, in Nice, in '64 and getting smashed on the wine they were allowed to have on board.)

I’m old and retired too. I only use Manual mode for flash and for macro. I mostly use Program mode since I take mostly just snapshots. But I do have some very good snapshots. At least I like them. I may go to Aperture mode if depth of field is important.
