We were at Carlsbad in March of this year. I used a monopod with surprisingly good results at shutter speeds like 1/4, 1/15th, etc. Had the ISO cranked up to 3200 for all photos. Used a D500 with a 16-80mm. I had an SB700 flash dialed back for just a little fill and a slight boost in light. I was able to use aperatures as small as f3.5 and f5.6 at times. The images are better than I thought I would be able to achieve. I was told by the staff that a tripod was allowed but you must be considerate of others. On the other hand a volunteer rangerette in the cave told me I had to completely collapse my monopod whenever I moved along the path. We did really enjoy the cave and spent the best part of two days in it and this is the second time we've been there.

So, we went in today, did the walking path down, OH. MY. GOD. Absolutely amazing. Stunning. Why did I wait so long to come here. Only complaint was the tourists racing to get to the bottom, with flashlights, making as much noise as possible, and missing some awesome stuff. Why bother taking that route if you're just going to ignore it? And everyone, you're right, the D750 is amazing in low light, I love it. Too tired to upload anything tonight, will do so in the next couple of days.

Glad you had such a good time. We took the elevator down but climbed the path back up. It was a good exercise challenge for us in our 70's.

We took our time going down, making sure to turn around, often, to see the view behind us. Again, amazing.
