Far from me to disagree with many of you, but my wife & I go to Rome almost annually — some years twice and other European cities regularly and I always carry my DLSR w/Black Rapid strap. I am on the dark side of 75 and — to this point— able to travel unmolested & undeterred by the criminal element. Simply a matter of common sense & traveling where (& when) a normally sensible person would be. No post midnight walks, no “exploring” of remote, unfamiliar areas. I have with me today ( in a major European city) my D750 w/Nikon 24-70 lens. Could lightning strike today? Of course, but normal precautions should prevail.

Travel well, travel safely, travel often! I apologize in advance to those who are put off by my observations.

Your probably just as likely to have your camera stolen by a burglar at home.

In the future if this happens one can click on Edit, erase duplicate post, and just enter a dash or period or "deleted duplicate post". Can't get rid of entirely (without contacting Admin) but does help clean up the thread. Just a suggestion.

Traveled to Rome, Tuscany, Florence and Venice with a Lumix FZ 200 and couldn't have been happier. The 7100 stayed at home. The Lumix is light and combined with a Cotton Carrier belt carrier was barely noticeable. All neck straps are a real pain. They are a strain on the neck and one hand is constantly occupied with keeping the camera from banging against your ribs or abdomen. Some think systems like Cotton Carrier look dorky but I think they look knowledgeable. Companies like Travel Smith offer purses and bags with steel wire in the straps and steel mesh in the bag to prevent slashing. Money belts are great as are pants with zippered pockets

My daughter is going to Rome and wherever soon. She has a Nikon D5100 which is a good camera, but a little heavy depending on lenses. I recently purchased a Lumix DMC-ZS60 which I think would be a good camera for her trip, but maybe not that rugged. Then I thought about the Olympus Tough Tg, more expensive, but it is tough and has a load of features and great reviews.
Who knows what the weather will be like, lots of walking, a drop or two and crooks may not be interested is snatching it. It would be black so not to draw any more attention than needed. I know the camera color thing. I have a Nikon1 J2 in orange, my clown camera according to my family.

I await your input.

Three weeks in Europe I carried the 6D with a 24-105. Left the battery/grip, L bracket and all other lenses at home. This was based on the advice of a fellow UHH. Two batteries and 6 SD cards. I never missed any of the other gear. Where this really benefited me was move get from city to city. The whole kit fit in my single piece of luggage, a carry on. I watched others dealing with more than a single bag and wondered why anybody would take so much stuff. I’ll never take more than one bag of public transportation is involved. If the trip requires a long lens for wildlife I’ll find something to leave at home to compensate. Traveling by car it’s a whole different story.
