I have never used one before (i don't do a lot of flash work), but i purchased one for my upcoming trip. Took some shots around the house to check it out.
put the unit on my 24-70 l lens and shot away.
I'm really impressed with the out come. M mode f8, 1/125, auto iso and ettl setting on the flash.

Which ring flash did you buy. I have the Paul C Buff and it’s huge

Sounds more like a "Beauty Dish"

i brought the Yongnuo yn14ex for $110, Canon's ring is around $500 and there are others for less then $50.
For what and how often i will use it; i think this will work just fine.

Yep. That is a smaller ring that attaches to the front of a lens and is battery powered. Max distance that it illuminates isn't very far. The Buff unit is more akin to a "Beauty dish" even though they call it a "Ring Light" and plugs into an AC outlet..

I have beauty dishes and the Buff unit in no way gives the results of a beauty dish

But, it isn't meant for shooting macro , especially in the field... As the website says. "Perfect for: Fashion, Portrait and Photo booth work"

So? I didn't buy it for macro work and would never use a ring light for macro anyway. If I was going to use it for macro: it is such a bright light even on low power, I would set it up about 15-20' from what I was going to photograph. I have a battery for it so location work is not a problem.

The image the OP posted was a closeup, which is why I responded as I did....

The poster( not the OP) was saying how large his was and that’s what prompted me to make the beauty dish comment.
