Well... The photos of the celestial body are great, but I think you win the contest hands-down! Cheers...

Here are some of my shots. A combination of events came together to allow me to get these shots. First, I ended up with a hotel room overlooking the water--something that almost never happens. Second, my daughter texted me at 10 am her time, which was 5am my time. So...I decided to peek outside and see what was there..

Hi Erv, I forgot about the Blue Moon shot but was out last night photographing anyway. I did take a few shots of the moon plus one of Jupiter to see if I could capture it's moons. Results are posted both to same scale. Details on each caption. I do have some lunar photos I took several years back with a telescope set at f/30, 15,000 mm focal length if anyone is interested.

I'd like to thank everyone for joining in!!! Made for a fun couple of days. I really enjoyed the pictures!! And the friendships I am getting. This is a nice group of folks!!!. Now what do you think about trying to do the same thing with the Moon at it's halfway point? I think it will be Sept. 8th.
And I would like to think I replied to everyone that posted, but I know I must have missed a few. But looking back at all the pictures today. Everyone did an awesome job!! Thanks again for playing!

Hi! Got your PM and I did do a reply, but it was late. I think it is on page 4 or 5. But to get into it a little deeper for you. If you are only shooting at 200mm, everything has to be right on. The moon is a very far, and there are lots of things we can see between it and us, and it is moving pretty fast. Your settings look pretty good as far as exposer. You missed the focus by just a little bit. And with the distances we are talking. It don't take much.:) I did play with it tho and here is a picture. I way over PP'd to to show you that you were very close on the focus. You did get detail starting to show. Not bad for no tripod. If you are by your car, use a blanket and set the camera on it. This will get you started.:) I did for many years that way.:)

Total noob here. Just bought the Nikon D3100 to take better pictures of my kids, and didn't realize how fun constantly snapping pictures with it could be. Saw the thread, and took these at the lake tonight, didn't catch any fish, but got a lot of good shots in the evening, and figured I would participate. No tripod and untouched. I was using the AF-S 55-200 VR for these. Advice is welcome. BTW I don't seem to have a very steady hand, lol. I think a tripod would help.
