Card Capacities

Does anyone know a source of low capacity CF and/or SD cards; by low capacity, I mean 128-256-512mb. I would like to start a project in which I take pictures of railroad museum visitors who have forgotten their cameras and just give them the memory card. I may or may not give them a stamped self-addressed envelope to return the sards once they have uploaded the pictures. But, if I can make a bulk purchase, that really won't matter. I would be putting just a few jps's on each card, so I don't need - and cannot afford large capacity cards.

There is a sinking feeling when parents bring in a five year old child and he/she gets to sit in the Engineer's seat of a real - and REALLY BIG - locomotive - and the parents forgot to bring a camera, their batteries are dead, etc.

As I said, I don't care if I get my card or my money back, but, being on a small fixed income, I can't afford regular capacity cards.

Thank you.

Wow, I can't answer your question but I can say that's really great of you to want to do that for parents. As a mom of 4 girls, I don't know how many times I have been somewhere and thought, "Darn, I really wish I had my camera." I can pull out my cellphone and snap a quick shot but it's just not the same.

Great idea. Prices have gotten so low that 2GB cards are cheaper than 4MB cards used to be. Be careful about getting off-brands to save money.

Why worry about "low capacity" cards ??? You can buy SD cards in "bulk pacaging for very cheap money on Amazon.com

I may have some old cards. PM me your address and I'll donate them to your VERY good cause. As some others here may !!!!

Why don't you just take their pictures and e-mail them the pictures?

I was looking at ebay the other day for cf cards and forgot to put in the capacity I wanted and one came up with low capacity and starting around a buck. I copy pasted the exact wording so you can look.
High Speed 2GB/4GB SD Secure Memory Card Adapter Compact Flash CF 4G 4 G 2G 2 GB

They started at around a dollar

I love your idea and think it is great you would even consider this project. Here is another thought you might consider.

Set up your own web site and post the photos on it for them to print o copy from.

It really is not that expensive to do or hard to learn how to do it. You can get cards printed cheaply to pass out. Request that they email you once they have copied or printed the photos so you can remove their photos to make room for someone elses photos. Or tell them they will only be available for a certian length of time such as three weeks, then they will be removed.

You could also mention on the card donations are reatly appreciated but not required.

That's a very good idea, and you don't have to worry about accumulating SD cards and getting them to the people before they leave. You could leave the pics on the site for 30 days and then delete and avoid overcrowding.

Thanks jerry,

I have a web site set up to show my photos to friends and family that live out of town. The company I deal with gives me unlimited capacity but I do remove photos at times because it gets crowded. I figure after a few months or so every one that wanted to look has done so. I am guessing it costs me somewhere around $60.00 a year and it is worth it to me. It makes me feel good to know that they can see my work and that they enjoy it.

The time it takes to maintain the site is minimal. Most of the time is in PP, which I would do anyways. To actually post the photos probably is around 10 minutes.

Many people are reluctant to give their email addresses to a stranger. I don't blame them; they have heard horror stories about the constant attempts to invade their privacy or steal their identities, and, most important, they don't want pictures of their children in the hands of a total stranger. I would much prefer to do it in a way that allows them to immediately take complete control of the images. It protects me, it protects them, and, most important, it protects the children!
