In 1956 there was a mid air collision of two commercial planes over the GC, in 2014 they erected a memorial plaque in remembrance. If you have been to the GC, the site is located near the desert Tower.

Because of this accident there were major operational changes made to commercial aviation.
Oh my! I'd completely forgotten about this tragedy. Beautiful images, Rena, and a sad reminder...

Thanks for looking Architect1776, the last time we were at the GC there was no plaque so it was good to see them acknowledge it.

Hi Donna, it is a sad reminder for sure and a little known event today.

Rena, great documentation.

Great docu-photo!! Good job! I saw a (aircraft tragedies) documentary on the accident recently...... sad for all, avoidable but for poor communication and letting two planes fly in the same space, same time. Now there are approximately 10,000 AC in the air over the US at any time, flying safely, some things are better today than they were.

Thanks RE for sharing pictures of the monument near the crash site at the Grand Canyon. We visited the GC a couple of years ago but didn't know about the monument.
We did visit the burial sites for the victims in both planes. Seems strange that they were buried in two different locations.
Cemetery at the Grand Canyon.

I knew NOTHING about the incident until I went to the Grand Canyon myself a few years back, that's when I saw the monument.
What I saw and did not photograph was the "cougar crossing" sign in the park!!!
