Hey everyone....I have had my 5300 for about 4 years. Thinking of upgrading and would like to continue using the 4 lenses I now have. Bought it as a kit, then added the 10-24 wide angle and the 35 mm.

Without breaking the bank, any suggestions on an upgrade? Another option is keeping the 5300 and upgrading the kit lenses. Thoughts appreciated.

I mostly photograph my grandkids, real estate photography and landscapes. Thank you!

Carol, you've got three decent options - D7200, D7500 and D500. The D500 is a professional level camera with an outstanding autofocus system, anti-flicker filter for shooting in fluorescent, halogen, LED or stadium lighting, very nice handling, more buttons vs menu items for camera settings, and a really nice feel. It also has slightly fewer, slightly larger pixels, so you can shoot at higher ISO with better quality. Not that the D7200 is a slouch - it is actually quite good. But the D500 is a bit better. It does weigh about 3 ounces more, but that should not be a deal breaker.

I haven't spent much time with the D7500, but my initial impression was that it was a sideways step for Nikon and not a reason to upgrade from a D7200.

You can't go wrong with any of the three - but I rank them in this order - D500, D7200 D7500.

Upgrade to the 7xxx series is a good choice. It will open you up to using more lenses and have greater control over them.

Can the D 7xxx series and the D500 auto focus with Nikon D lenses (those without a focus motor)?

Yes they can. Only the D5xxx and D3xxx (and the D40, D60) can't.

I am checking! I think I was wrong. The D40 and D60 I think does AF with D lenses.

D7100 or D7200 would be good choices from 500 to 800 depending on used refurb or new.

Totally agree about articulating screen. I bought D7100 with no articulating screen. In process of selling it.
