Growing up in Queens NY in the early 50’s, at age 8 my Dad taught me how to ride the NY subways (by myself) and at age 6 my mother let me go to the movies for the first time by myself. Can you imagine parents sending their kid out into the world like that today?
What was my first “solo” movie? The Student Prince, starring Mario Lanza! She said I came home afterwards waving an imaginary chalice in my hand singing DRINK ... DRINK ... DRINK! If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll understand the reference.
Been a fan of Mario Lanza ever since. However, in one of his songs which starts out “Oh mystery of life, at last ... I don’t understand what Mario Lanza has to do with photography?”

Mario probably had his photograph taken many times.........
I have an old vinyl record of The Student Prince. Have always loved it and play it once and a while on my radio program. Yes, our radio station has two professional turntables. The fidelity is great but not stereo of course.

Used to sing along with Come Primo! Great memories, thanks for reminding me.
My favorite? Drink, Drink, Drink from the Student Prince.
Definitely up there with the great tenors, if not the greatest. Thanks for the reminder of this wonderful singer.
What memories! I remember when I was young, in the 50's, and my mom sat at the piano and sing some of those songs. Thank you

Too bad he was unable to play the part he was too heavy went to Edmund Purdom who lip synced the words but I still have the movie and a lot of his recordings he is my favourte singer
Bought a CD with a lot of his best last year. So nice to hear him again.
Back in about 1980, "60 Minutes" did a story about Placido Domingo. The interviewer asked him if there was any tenor that he envied. After a short pause, he said, "I would give my right arm, any tenor alive today would give his right arm (some wouldn't admit it, but they would), to have the breath control of Mario Lanza." Lanza could sing as softly as a whisper or he could drown out an orchestra and hit the pitch perfectly on every note. I have several of his records, saw all of his movies, and probably most of his TV shows.
