You will be happy with your Canon 300 2.8 II lens as I am with mine. According to DxO Mark, this lens is sharper than the 400 2.8 II, 500 f/4, 600 f/4, etc. According to my friends who have these other lenses, my photos are sharper. A recent Osprey photo, below, was taken with my Canon 5Dsr, Canon 300 2.8 II, Canon 2x III extender.

Excellent! The proof is in the pudding (or the photo in this case)

Prime time for spring migration of warblers right now Chris. Nothing more testing than to photograph a 4" hormonal bird lurking in a dimly lit canopy. Make your way to the coast to the salt marshes and photograph shoreline birds like Hammonasset State Park or Milford Point.

That's a bit far for me, Haydon … I'm up at the furthest northern point of Fairfield County, just a stone's throw from Putnam County, New York, and about a ten-minute drive from Litchfield County. There are plenty of parks, up, this way, though … along with a very picturesque drive alongside rivers and brooks, where plenty of birds accumulate. Not to mention Putnam Lake and Ball Pond, which both have abundant proliferations of bird wildlife. Plus - Squantz Pond and Kent Falls - both State Parks.

Beyond birds, 600mm via an extended 300 f/2.8L IS II can be applied to a variety of needs, from airshows to swamp insects.

I wouldn't hijack this thread.
I would start a new one.

Very well taken, love that you are able to get so perpendicular to the dragon, nothing like the background blur created by a long fast prime lens, I have gone back to a 180mm macro simply because the quality of out of focus area.

Thank you Geffory! There was no 'closer' option on this swamp trail in Florida where the dragons were landing on sticks out in the water. Only focal length could get closer.

My first real lens purchase after owning a DSLR for a couple of years beyond the kit lens that came with the camera was a macro lens, spent the next couple of years chasing bugs and tiny flowers, still love it when I do it, but I just don't seem to have the energy to chase bugs anymore.... I will still do a jumping spider from time to time but love wild flowers, especially the tiny ones.

Thanks Regis, your image looks great, the 300 with extender certainly is handholdable which my 500/4 is not, I appreciate your feedback in helping me to make this purchase.

Your welcome, Blurryeyed. Remember, the lens will close focus to 6 feet, so you will be able to get those Bee, Butterfly, Dragonfly, Etc. shots.

I also use the EF12 or EF25 extension tubes to shorten the focus distance. This is handheld at the butterfly exhibit at the Jacksonville Zoo. The tubes don't report in the EXIF, so the 300 was extended to 420mm, but I can only guess that I had the EF 25 II mounted too.

I have a post queued for tomorrow that brings the FD 300 f/2.8L and the FD 1.4X into the future of today, now working on a Sony.

Getting back to your two bird shots, the second one is simply exquisite. I find it difficult to imagine it being any sharper than it already is. Absolutely beautiful photograph.

If you are talking about the first post in the thread it is simply a crop from the first picture, that image was shot at 300mm no extender, Birding becomes an addiction for those of us who are weak minded and penny foolish. I remember wishing that I could afford the first Canon 100-400 and ended up with a good deal on a used lens here at the hog, later I just could not stand that the 100-400 II was better still so I saved and went without a few things and ended up getting that lens again here at the hog.... but that was still not enough, the next was the 500/4... and so it goes, now it was that the Mark II's and III's of Canon's big whites came out and they are better than the older lenses such as my 500.... I ended up with this 300.

The only thing good that I can say about this addiction is that it is better than becoming addicted to drugs and as expensive as it can become it is probably cheaper too.

I'm not sure if that qualifies as Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) but I think not. It appears to me to be the Pursuit of Excellence Syndrome (POES) from which most, if not all, of us suffer to one degree or another depending primarily on the size of our pocketbooks. Your work proves that it is POES in your case.
