I have a Canon F1 35mm film camera which I have owned since the early 1980s. I want to get it back into full operation and am looking for a repair shop that will do a CLA and replace the light seals.
It functions perfectly well but lets the light in due to the light seals. Even the mercury battery is still good.

Has anyone had any personal experience with such repair shops and can recommend them? I did a quick Google search and see costs ranging from around $60 to several hundred.

Thanks in advance,

Peter B.

Look up Blue Moon camera repair in Portland, Oregon. They only work on analog gear and will provide an estimate via email.

After extensive review I just used this old Zelot company to repair my Kodak 750H Slide Projector and was delighted - came back on time looking & working like new. They have a packaged repair (see link) for your camera but can't hurt to call them to see if less for particular repair.

If you live near New Port Richey, Fl. the Pasco Camera Exchange on Main St. just off US-19 is a good choice. A couple of years ago I took my Olympus OM-1 there. They didn't do the work on site, but sent it out. A good job was done.

Check out Camtronics here in Columbus, OH. They've been around since the mid-60's and have an excellent reputation here. http://camtronicscamerarepair.com/

I would recommend your own shop that is replace the foam yourself. Don't do the CLA as long as it still work well.

Hi, just had my Canon F1 serviced by Midstate Camera Repair, like your service plus shutter adjustment $95. Highly recommended. They are in RI.

Not related to the repair of film cameras, I too needed the repair of my Kodak 850H Slide Projector for a short slide show and really did not want to spent the time and effort to convert all the slides in the tray into digital. I remember someone some 10 years ago asking $100-150 plus shipping to repair the projector. I happened to be going to a local camera swap meet that weekend and was looking for a someone to repair the projector when he said why don't you just buy this 750H (I tested it on site)? Done deal and problem solved!

Well when my Kodak Carrousel 860H died I simply bought an Ektagraphic for $15 and bought a like new Carousel 4600 for $5. But the Canon F1 is worth more than $100 depending on condition so if the OP can fix it for $60 or $95 I do think it's worth it.
OP didn't say which F1 he has but the new F1 introduced in 81 can fetch $500 in good condition. But he said mercury battery which the new F1 doesn't use.

Are there mercury battery substitutes that use to run all the cameras of the 60’s-90’s?

They do but all are compromised in my opinion but however I wasn't talking about this. I was talking about which version of the F1 the OP has. The version that uses mercury battery (introduced in 71) is not worth as much as the new version (introduced in 81) which used Silver Oxide battery. But the OP said he had it since the early 80's so I can't be sure which he has.
