I too have recently started using a monopod to help counter the shakes, and it works well

I had a monopod. I noticed that, although it would steady the shot in the vertical direction, there's still motion blur in the horizontal direction. Even at shutter speeds of 1/250 second there was still motion blur in the horizontal direction. I'm steady but the blur was there. I ended up returning it. I would rather hand hold the camera than use a monopod. If the monopod doesn't work out try a stringpod.

String pods fit in your pocket, or camera bag. They can be made for less than $5 with parts from a hardware store. They can be made DIY in a String pod that fits on one or both feet. Have been using a string pod for years. If you leave it at home on a long air or car trip, you can stop in a local hardware store at your destination. An airline will never tell you there is no room on the flight for a String Pod.

If the Pope will let you take a camera into the Vatican, It's unlikely He or She will not allow your String Pod.

I have a Sirui EP-224S carbon monopod. It has 3 short (~10") feet at the base that you can fold down to turn it into a mini tripod. Camera stabilization with the Sirui is superior to what you can get with a regular monopod. I use it where I can't use a tripod. I frequently hold the monopod so that only 2 feet are touching the ground and let the camera's VR take care of the up & down motion. You can detach the feet portion to turn it into a regular monopod. Using this monopod I have been able to take very sharp pictures with a 200mm telephoto in very dim light at 1/30 sec under very dim light.

I'm new to the group, so far have just been observing, trying to learn. In the last few years, I'm having more trouble steadying the camera. I hate to carry a tripod, especially for trips. Is a monopod worth trying for the time being?

A monopod or tripod can get in the way on trips. Some tour companies frown on their use because they like to keep the group moving on site seeing (non-photography) trips.
My strong suggestion is to check out the vibration reduction features of your camera and make sure it is turned on, I would also suggest shooting in shutter priority and make sure you are shooting fast enough to eliminate shake, say 1/250 sec. or 1/500 sec.
Again, I personally find monopod's get in the way more than they are helpful.

This link gets you to a great little tutorial on monopod usage. It's a must read before purchasing a new monopod and pressing it into service. Their are excellent illustrations of positions and the use of a tilt head that enables easy positioning of the camera.

E.L., what a great and short but informative video! I watched it and learned a ton on how to use mine better! Thank you much for sharing it!

Do you use a ball hear or a tilt head on yours?

Tom

Any recommendations for a simple, reasonably priced head to go with an inexpensive monopod?

Yes! That was all I used on our week long Alaska trip. It was Light, fit in carry on, & easy to deploy. It absolutely did the trick. I got a MeFoto.

Yes and they make Walking / Hiking Sticks that convert to a Monopod for your camera and collapse down to carry-on size for the luggage space on board aircraft........go for it.

I don't have the link but this was discussed earlier last month on the UHH site and maybe someone here can show it to you or you can google it up from archives ????

It will resist up/down movement of the camera and also help with side to side movement. With a quick-disconnect head, you can carry the camera around your neck and use the monopod as a walking stick.

Initially, I have found that working with a monopod is about as inconvenient as with a tripod so I don’t use mine very much, or my tripod.

I have been using a monopod for some time and find it very helpful to add a ball head so I can reposition my camera for all kinds of different shots. Good luck

Thank you bleirer. I bought an inexpensive monopod at Walmart but it needs a head. I'll take a look at this one.
