Nikon D5100 Versus Canon Rebel T3i.
I bought the Nikon D5100, the main reason being the HD feature. This is definitely not a full-blown program, but it can give you photos you can work with in PS and not go through multiple exposures, going into a separate HDR program, etc. And I did read hat the D5100 is supposed to eliminate the blue fringing that sometimes occurs in photos. Love the camera. Glad I bought it.

Anyone got any information on which they think is the better camera. I'm leaning towards the Nikon but the Rebel has so many good points also....comments???
This reminds me of the old comparison of which car is better, the Ford or the Chevrolet. Cameras are about as varied as people. You are doing the right thing by asking other people's opinions but you will have to find the camera that suits your personal needs and that's where this storehouse of information on the internet comes in. Good Luck!
If you don't already have Nikon or Canon lenses, hold/handle both cameras and feel which one feels 'better' in your hands to hold and carry. Both will take fantastic pictures once you learn all their features.
I have had Canon A1, Rebel XSi, T2i and T3i. I tend to buy Canon because ever since Paul Simon took Nikon and Kodachrome to #1 back in 1971, all else being equal, Nikon is more expensive.
I began with Canon film in early 70s after a brief stint with Minolta. Canon seemed to be more affordable at the time.
I stayed with Canon through a few models including the digital revolution, never disappointed with Canon and Canon Lens.
That is my story and I am sticking to it.
Have the D5100 which is one of 3 Nikons I own and the real workhorse of the fleet. It is light and have not found a situation where I can't use the camera. It sounds like you've made the decision to buy it and now I would suggest you save about $600.00 and go out and buy the Tamron 18-270 PZD zoom lens. You'll seldom ever have to change lenses again and that will keep both your camera/lens clean from dust. I own 3 lenses, the 18-270 Tamron, a Nikon 50mm 1.4 fixed lens and a Sigma 400mm fixed lens which I seldom bring out of the house. If you bought the D5100 kit you can trade those plastic Nikons in for metal lenses which may be a bit heavier but also much more sturdy. I don't like lugging around more lenses than I have to and this solved that problem for me. Good luck with your new camera and hope to see some pics here soon.............
My word!!!! I have a d5100 Nikon and have been dreaming about a d700. What do you think......should I even think about getting one....????
I guess I would have to ask why?? What do you find lacking in the D5100 that the D700 will give you?? If you feel you will gain something by getting the D700 then go for it but don't just get it because you want a new camera. I like the lightness and ease of handling of the D5100 because I do alot of sports and have pretty much everything I need in that camera. It's your dollar so do as you please and I wish you luck in which ever direction you choose to take...............
I have used my Nikon D5100 since July, and I love it. I got an
18-270mm lens with it and I'm as happy as a pig in mud.
I'm not saying that it's better than the Canon, it may not be.
Both are excellent products. I find the D5100 to be an awesome
low light camera. For me it's Nikon.
I have the Nikon D5100 and love it. Whether it is better or worse than the Canon I can't say, since I've never used the Canon. A friend at work has the Canon and he loves that as well.
When I decided to go from my K1000 to digital I bought a Canon Rebel Xti, main reason was that it had a auto cleaning sensor & the Nikon at the time didn't. I've taken over 10,000 pictures with it without any problems. Recently the pop up flash won't automatically open, but I've been needing an excuse to buy a real flash.
A simple question: why consider it?
See:
http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon-D5100-vs-Nikon_D700 Costco has a reasonable buy on a D7000 package now, though. It is a modern design.

I traded a Nikkormat ELW and 9 Ais lenses at Adorama and purchased the D5100 with the 18-55 and bought the 70-300. After 40 years the Nikkormat never let me down. Nikon RULES!
