Question and a challenge

Was over at a friends home and saw a pair of Brown-headed Nuthatches flying in and out of a hole in a dead pine tree. A first for me, a Nuthatch nest. I set up to get some pics. I watched off and on for about 6 hours. They would come alternately about every 5 minutes with some kind of a bug, I assume for the chicks. About every 10th trip one would come out with what looked like a grub larvae. Thats my question: Anybody know what that was all about?

I also had countless opportunities to get them in flight, a first for me, a Nuthatch in flight. I shot over 600 pics, and this is the best I could do, and it's not saying much. Wondering if anyone has ever got a nice shot of a Nuthatch in flight??? Challenge??

Opinion only.....
It's a "potty" sack from one of the youngsters.

Reason I say this is I have Purple Martins annually and they too bring out the "potty sack" and on their way across my vegetable garden, they drop the sack...in the garden. I have surgically opened a few of them to see what they were...they stink too!

As I said, my opinion.

Dave

Excellent series. I, too, believe it is some sort of waste removal.

OH REALLY NICE SET........you have nailed it with this little family of birds in that hollowed tree.

It doesn't get any better than this and your camera & glass have captured wonderful images of great little feathered-friends in the tree. I love your work and more please if you can.......thanks.
