I am considering buying one of these. Prices range from between $650 and $800 here in Canada. I am also have and option for a Tokina AT-X pro 28-80mm f2.8 for $175.00. I have used the Tokina but have found it is soft at 2.8 but becomes sharper when you stop down to 5.6-8. It also has purple and green fringing hat I can rid of most but not all that n post. Both lenses weigh 2 lbs. and are metal construction. Thanks for your thoughts. This will be my main lens and I also have a 19-35mm. I use the lenses on a Nikon D700.

The Tokina AT-X 280 AF PRO is a very good lens and the value is hard to beat. They normally go for $300 +/- so if you can get a new one for $175 that's a great deal. The new AT-X 280 AF PRO has an excellent quality of build designed to last a lifetime...and longer. I suspect when the world ends as we know it, the cockroaches will be using this lens to take pictures of each other for it will last that long.

The Nikon (I'm a Nikon user too) is of course a fabulous lens as well and it too is masterfully built. I doubt you could go wrong buying one however for the price difference you could buy a second Tokina lens, perhaps a macro, and enjoy a wider range of venues.

The Nikon d700 and Nikon 28-70 2.8 along with the Nikon 80-200 2.8 was what I used when I did wedding photography. The combination will still blow out of the water many other combinations. My wife shoots the Nikon 24-70 and aside from 4mm, they produce the same quality pictures. There is a reason the Tokina is $175 and the Nikon is 4+ times as much.

I purchased the Nikkor version of that lens five years ago from a fellow hogger when I bought my D610 from Cameta. It is a superb lens and I take 80% of my photos with it.

1. Keep in mind this is a HEAVY lens and should not be considered for a carry around with you all day lens. If you need the speed then good.
2. This is a D lens, if you plan to add a Nikon Z camera in the future, this lens will not work automatically on it.

Be very wary of this lens as it has a history of the AF going a little wonky with being noisy, squeaky and outright failures with the AF-S mech. Optically it is an outstanding lens but it is an old model and I think the internals weren't quite robust enough drive the mass this lens possess's at a pro-use level.
I bought one used out of Japan last year and it had AF issues so I sent it back. Do a YouTube search on this lens and you will be surprised at the number of videos about repairing this issue. Also any lens considered grey-market in origin might present problems getting it serviced by NikonUSA.

I'd be less concerned about gray market and more just for age around getting older lenses serviced. But there are independent shops that can do it if they can get necessary parts.

I had one of the these about 10 years ago. Great lens and optically amazing. I bit noisy but if you're not shooting weddings or funerals it's not a problem. I bought mine (used) for $700 and sold it 3 years later for $750. The upshot is that I had saved my money and took the $$ from the sale of that lens to buy a new (one of my very few new purchases) Nikkor AFS 24-70 f/2.8G which focuses faster, is a bit lighter and a bit more range. It also has better coatings and contrast. I'd recommend getting a used Nikkor 24-70 vs the 28-70 and like many, only Nikkor glass on my bodies.

I use this lens a lot. It is extremely sharp and has great contrast. I use it on auto focus occasionally with no problems. This lens is built like a tank, heavy but worth it. Here is a sample image made with this lens. Also this lens is good for Infra Red photography, no hot spot and this is one of the reasons I got one.
