What sized photos are best to upload to a stock photo agency? I looked this up earlier and got a lot of info about always make them 300dpi, but no one mentioned a preferred size (if there is one). Are these agencies good or is a exercise in futility?
I only know that Getty takes pictures and they pretty much have to be perfect. But when you get some accepted by Getty, they get your photos viewed by many people and agencies that pay to use your photos. I know a woman that is very successful using Getty. She told me all about them but I couldn't be troubled with all the things that they look for in a perfect image. But every month she shows me the images that Getty sold the rights to. She makes anywhere from $500 a month to a couple grand a month. The pictures that Getty gets paid for aren't permanently sold to other entities.. They are only selling the rights to use them for a period of time for certain reasons. Once one of Sue's pictures was used by Epson on the outside of one of their new printer boxes. When Getty gets paid, she gets a percentage. I don't know about any other stock photo agencies and I don't know what sizes they are looking for but the number one thing that Getty looks for is "perfect focus" and "zero noise". They also like personal pictures like holiday pictures with children in them. Sue sold one of herself that she scanned of her in a swimming pool with floaties. She sold another of herself in front of a Christmas tree. She sold some of her dog. She sells quite a few still life pictures with flowers etc.
The stock sites I have looked at have their requirements listed
There's a book called Photographer's Marketplace (I don't know if it's still printed) that lists all the different places one can sell their photos, including Stock Agencies. It will tell you what kind of photo they are looking for, as well as rights/ownership of the photo.
