I am about to leave for a photo shoot in Tuscany. Apart from my 16-35 and 24/70 I plan to take a third lens in case I have to go long. I have a choice of 70-200 IS F4 ( the previous generation); and 100-400 IS II. Any recommendations? I will mostly shoot lanscape with the odd foray into town. Thanks

I've been to Tuscany and Umbria several times. I mostly just used my crop 18-105 f4. A longer lens would be useful for shooting landscapes of some of the hilltowns and villas. You need to shoot them from a distance, but haze can be a problem.
Enjoy and post some pics when you get back.

Depending upon what you like to shoot, I would get 70-200 IS F4 ( the previous generation) as a back up for that image to give you the reach you need.
Have a great trip and post some images when you get back.

Whether you're in Tuscany or Tuscaloosa, the focal length needed will depend upon the subject distance and your desired field of view.
Edit: If you're going to post pictures, post them in the Gallery, NOT Main Discussion.
When I toured Tuscany I had a crop sensor camera and a18-105 lens as mentioned above. I never felt the need for anything longer. Nowadays I have other lenses and would probably take my 24-120 only because I think it gives a higher quality image than my 18-105. I don't think I would burden myself with the weight of my 70-200 f2.8
If the 70-200 is your only option to cover the 70 to 120 range take that. On the other hand is you are shooting landscapes and in-town you may have little need for anything over 70 anyway. The third lens might just weigh you down.
Thanks. I pretty much decided not to take the 100-400 and just take the holy trinity.
I am in Tuscany now—have been for several weeks. Haze is a real problem. Prepare for it. I would suggest a 35mm prime.

I use only the Sony HX99V with a built in 24-720 mm lens. Does it all and goes in my belt pouch. Travel right, travel lite.

You will extend your range greatly only sacrificing the range between 70-100mm by taking the 100-400.

However the OP expects to "mostly shoot lanscape with the odd foray into town" Is the 100-400 range or the 70-200 range more important? On the whole I think that neither the 70-200 or (even less) the 100-400 would get much use on this trip.

Echoing others, I have never found that I needed more than 120mm except for one or two instances, then I added my 1.4x tele extender into the lens chain. I think that for the most part the 24-70 will be your 'go-to' lens. Also don't plan on relying on a tripod especially in the busier locations.

Why lug around those lenses. Have you thought about a new camera? I recently bought a Sony RX10, Mark III; it's a "bridge" camera with a 24 to 600 mm Zeiss zoom lens. One camera, one lens, weather resistant, light, electronic shutter and view finder... Sony has introduced the Mark IV, which has better specs than the Mark III but if price matters, the Mark III still does a great job.
