Got a D7200 recently and discovered there is no way to clip on a screen cover like I have for my D7000. They make a thin protector that somehow mounts directly on the screen but it sounds to be prone to wrinkles and can be snagged at the edge and peel off. Without a cover, has anyone had problems with scratches on the screen? I’m not a heavy user but am wondering if an LCD screen even needs protection. Your thoughts or experience would be appreciated.
Like you, I was disappointed that no provision has been made for attaching a polycarbonate protector to the movable screens on newer cameras. It does appear to me that such a protector could be accommodated on displays that tilt only, like the D500 and the D850, using the recesses at the hinges as attachment points, but I've not seen that anyone has come out with an option. Of course, attaching any type of screen protector will interfere with the ability to use the touchscreen functions.
That said, I do not like unprotected screens either. The tech at my camera shop attached protective screens to both of my new cameras. He followed a very careful cleaning process first and worked very hard to get everything "level & plumb." So far, both have been fine. No peeling, no scratches. I was skeptical, but no complaints so far. I cannot remember what brand product he installed, but they were customized to each camera and cost about $40 each. He comp'd me the second one because "you're such a good customer." I thought the characterization was pretty humorous, but appreciated the display protector.
That is the problem, gvarner, with our loss of the local camera store. There was a time that you would have held and looked over the camera model before you purchased. You would have had a chance to notice it would not hold a screen cover. For most of us, today, that is a thing of the past.

Do you remember what brand of cover?
When I got my D1x and I believe the D2Xs they were supplied with snap on LCD protectors. I think the LCD technology has improved enough that they are no longer considered necessary. Even if you got a light scratch you would probably not notice it when the screen is active.
With everything from car radios to refrigerators being touch screen, a lot of research has gone into today's screen technology, including making them durable.

I agree about durable. I suspect that they are now a hardened glass. I know that the screen on my iPad is pretty damn durable with specially hardened glass.

Somehow I didn't end up with the packaging, since they installed it, and my memory has failed to recall who made the protectors. I'll do some checking.
I got the Kenko film LCD screen protectors for my D500 and D750. They make one for the D7500. The D7200 and D7500 have the same size screen so you could order the one for the D7500 and use that.
One hint about applying them: You have to get it aligned properly and attach it right the first time. If you try to peel it back off and re-apply, it will get messed up.
I don't believe Canons have protectors, so I assume that the screens are durable enough. Probably applies to Nikons also?

The D7000 has a 3" screen, which does allow for the clip-on device. But the D7100 and D7200 (D7500, too) have the larger 3.2" screens, whilst being the same body size, so the clip-on screens no longer work. The best solution is the Schott glass, which you have to stick on (not like the plastic overlays, so there are no bubbles which can form, as happens with the plastic ones.) When you order it, from Adorama, etc. ($25) you get three pieces. One for the LCD screen at the back, one for the LCD screen, on the top, and the third is for the viewfinder. You don't need to attach all three, of course. But make sure you position it right, G!!!
I have Vello LCD screen protectors from B & H on both a D7100 and a D850. When I got the D850 that was one of the first things I did, mount the screen protector. I don't leave home without them. Just have to take your time and install them as per the instructions.
