I bought the software the way you describe at Micro Center. When you buy this way, you are paying for the first year's subscription. The year starts when you install the software, not when you purchase the product cards. You then do not make any more payments until the end of that year approaches, when you can either pay for the next year or provide credit card information for monthly payments. You do not make an upfront payment plus monthly payments. Either way, though, you are paying in advance, whether for a year or for each month in that year. At this point, I still have not provided any credit card information for next year's subscription, and have not paid one additional penny for the license. I will have to do so in June, however, when this year's subscription expires.

And the amount I paid was exactly the same as it would have cost if I had gone online and initiated the subscription. I purchased a product card because we have been victims of financial fraud in the recent past, and have no interest in Adobe or anyone else having our credit card information on file. Too many "reputable" companies have promised to hold customer information safe and then failed to do so. Renewal will most likely be paid using a prepaid card of some sort.
As others have stated, this is not the way it work... (show quote)

Larry, I signed up online, agreed to a monthly charge to my credit card of $9.99 monthly for a year, and downloaded the package. (No upfront payment) My credit card provider guarantees me against loss due to fraud, and I don’t miss the monthly tenspot at all. I use it on my work desktop, my laptop, and my wife’s tablet. Might add it to my wife’s phone as she has a big screen, but I doubt I’ll be adding it to my iPhone SE.

I’m learning the packages slowly, but I get more entertainment value per buck from LR/PS than any other entertainment dollars I spend.

As I always note, “That’s just me...” But I have more fun than I deserve from this purchase!

Andy

PS: My credit card protection is through the small, local community bank where I do all my bidness. If you’re not banking with one, you should be.

I have been shooting in jpeg format and wanting to switch over to raw. Question is what editting program do I use if I don't want to pay a fee every month to use plus the initial cost. I find this quite annoying. We pay for a program then have to make a monthly payment just to use something already paid for so that we can get updates once every few months. The amount we have to pay for a program the updates should be free. Now that I am done bitching what's the best program for a Canon shooter that uses a Imac computer and Pixma pro 100 for my printing.

I think that Canon gave you a RAW editor with your camera. You can download from usa.Canon.com using your camera's serial number if you don't have your CD or a CD ROM. Personally I don't think that $10/month is too much of a hardship for Adobe Bridge/Photoshop/Lightroom package, but if you don't care to spend that there is the Canon software.

I think that Photoshop Elements is a good deal. It is not as complete as the full photoshop, but you can do about 75% of the stuff that the full version does for photographers. And that is the key, for photographers. The full phoitoshop is really for graphic designers because it does things that I would never want to do. You can get elements on sale often for less than the listed price.

That said, if you are not going to do a lot of work on your photos, the CD that comes from the camera mfg would probably work fine. I use Elements and I am very happy. Upgrade every 3 years or so, but that is not really necessary.
