The word "cheese" does not require a pursing of the lips before enunciating, therefor is the perfect word for a group photo. You are much less likely to have some in the closed lip position while others have already assumed the "smile".

I read that if you want to get a "realer" smile, have them say, "money." It works when photographing my grandson.

Good for you, you didn't trailer your bikes to Sturgis, like so many of the "real enthusiasts" do.

I would think asking folks to say something that doesn’t resolve easily into a common idea could elicit a “WTF” expression on a few faces, especially in a group shot where people process information at different speeds.

In response to Longshadow's comment about saying something odd. . .
I have always used odd expressions to get people to smile. It's a holdover from my church directory days when I had a minimum amount of time to get maximum results. (Had to photograph sixty families with breakdowns in ten hours). Believe it or not "cheese" was always my last resort when none of the other expressions worked. These expressions used didn't taken into account the science of stretching the lips and showing teeth. They were just crazy alliterations designed to elicit a laugh or a smile. Here is a list and I am sure there are many others.
Fuzzy Pickles
Turkey Toes
Lizard Lips
Beany Weenies
Hippy Chickens (done with a shaking of the hips)
Stinky Feet
Green Weenies
Jiggely Jello
You may feel like an idiot saying these things but I was always smiling . . . all the way to the bank.
