The Dewey Decimal system replaced the previous search engine. Books were probably arranged by date of purchase, or maybe by the color of the binding, or by size.
Here is one for you.....my son goes to Colombia University. Last year He took us for a tour of the campus including the library, they still use this card system for several areas. Couldn’t help but ask him where all the tuition goes 🙂

Oh, yeah! I spent a lot of time in just such a “search engine,” being an English and history major in both undergrad and grad school. Where was that @#$%%^ internet when I needed it?

Hard to say, but, since he's going to a University in South America, perhaps it's going to bribes...
Remember it well. Spent (too) many hours searching. Later, I worked for a company that made the label holder/pull for the drawer as well as the rod and card follower that pushed the cards to the front. Technology quickly killed that product line. But it had a good run for many years.
