The big mistake that many people make is not to pay attention to the CD that you get when you purchase a camera new. This cd has a program that allows you to edit you photos for free of course. Just install the program and then go to www.canonusa.com and if you want, download the latest program, you do need the serial number of your camera to download it. I hope this helps.

Does any manufacturer NOT supply a RAW editor for their RAW files (if created)?

I am trying to wean myself away from LR (5.7) because of the “new” monthly cost if I want to update. I am experimenting with ON1 and Luminar and find them both quite good programs. ON1 says that it rivals Photoshop in most ways. I can’t attest to that because I’ve never used Photoshop, but from what I read I believe it. At any rate I think you’d like either of these programs. Also, there are lots of training videos for both of them.

My 2 cents is to suggest Photoshop.

I have been shooting in jpeg format and wanting to switch over to raw. Question is what editting program do I use if I don't want to pay a fee every month to use plus the initial cost. I find this quite annoying. We pay for a program then have to make a monthly payment just to use something already paid for so that we can get updates once every few months. The amount we have to pay for a program the updates should be free. Now that I am done bitching what's the best program for a Canon shooter that uses a Imac computer and Pixma pro 100 for my printing.

Use the manufacturer software. They are not very good as editor but good enough in my opinion (in some case better) as a RAW converter. Then you can save the conversion as TIFF and edit it further in any software that you used to use with the JPEG.

use the DPP4 that comes with Canon. If you don't have it download for free from canon site.

I think there is a misunderstanding in how the subscription software works. You don't pay a fee to "buy" the software and then a monthly subscription charge on top of that. There is no initial cost for the software...just the monthly fee. I use Lightroom Classic and Photoshop and pay a $10 monthly fee. No up front software cost. For my $10, I can use the software on multiple computers and mobile devices, get all updates including new features, and get support from the company. So it's $120 per year...period. Given what I used to spend to purchase the two applications and update them every 2-3 years, the monthly subscription isn't that much and I'm always up to date.

You already have a very good raw processor/editor on your iMac. Apple Photos has all the basic editing tools, and is all you need for most processing. You will want to move on when and if you want to do “local” processing with layers and other tools, but for now, and maybe for years, it is all you need.

Further, it upgrades frequently at no cost, mostly to quite quickly include new camera models in its capabilities.

Although I am not fond of advertising a product without getting compensated, here it comes. I have had some friends recommend ACDSee programs to me. I hope this works for you. If not, please accept my apology.

i'm w/the PH and LR subscription crowd. hard to beat $120 per year for those heavy duty tools. you've already spent $$ on camera, now is not the time to go cheap and cut corners. there's a reason why adobe is the "big dog".

i used to have the stand alone LR, but am happy i made the switch. also adobe tosses in "portfolio" which is a web hosting at no further fee.

yes, shoot RAW all the time since that format provides more information to which to edit.

have fun no matter what!

Well Adobe might be right for you. No initial payment, just a low monthly fee which you can cancel for a while if you are not using it and then just restart it. You know, like HBO. After that last GOT subscribe to HBO, binge watch and then cancel!

Or you could use the editor that came with your camera.

I use Luminar. I used to love it now I just like it as the newest version Luminar 3 is a bit buggy but still usable. And no monthly ransom to Adobe!

I started shooting Canon a year ago. I started using Canon's DPP4 for RAW processing. It seemed pretty good to me, but learning was hard for me. It seems to be a fairly complete program and should work GREAT with your printer. I switched to Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 about 6-7 months ago. There is much more online help posts and videos VS: Canon DPP4, and help video's with any Adobe product. I'm going to continue with Elements until "I" outgrow it, if ever. It is on sale for $70 a lot, and sometimes it is $49.99(rarely) , but I got it for that from Amazon when I got it. I have a friend who has the big photoshop and lightroom programs, and almost every time he tells me of some feature it has, I look online and research and the same thing is on Elements, maybe called something a little different. I have read Elements is about 1 to 2 years behind the new features of LR & PS. IF you edit every day a lot of photos, maybe the full program is needed. IMO, a serious hobbist should be happy for quite a while with Elements while learning and saving bucks.

I'm color blind. Previously I used Picasa 3, LightRoom, Raw Therapee, and I tried Gimp too. Now I use PhotoScapeX and it works very well for me, and it supports processing the Canon Raw files, except for CR3, which they are in the process of updating. It can be used accurately with 3 or 4 clicks or you can REALLY get into serious editing. Here are a couple of sites for you, Enjoy. Be sure to select Mac/or Windows. Get the free version first (it never expires), and you can always upgrade. Also, please do yourself a favor and watch the following youtube video both to see if you would be interested and for training if you are interested. Please note that the program comes with many tutorials. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWC-SAuYOzw&t=325s Instruction and download info http://x.photoscape.org/. May you always enjoy your photo journey!

Just to correct one misconception in your post, there is no "initial cost" to the Adobe subscription.
