I'm sure there must be something, but I can't think of anything I have done photographically that I regret.

Trying too hard to avoid making mistakes. We learn to walk, eventually to run, by falling down.

Very true. I've learned more from making mistakes than I have any other way.

When I first started in photography, a few times I did not get the film leader inserted fully and correctly into the take up spool!
I NEVER make that mistake now.....!!!

I was thinking the same thing.

buying canon

I agree with that one. I bought Canon instead of Nikon back in the 70's and then when auto focus cameras came out all my expensive Canon FD lenses were un-usable on any new Canon. If I would of picked Nikon I would of gone digital much sooner since I would of only been adding a body to my collection.

I not only used but continue to use Aperture Priority for birds in flight.

But birds in flight are movement, movements control on a camera is shutter speed. To achieve an aperture you have set your camera on, could make the speed drop below what will stop the movement. If the speed drops to low you can't get a sharp picture, so depth of field or in other words depth of sharpness won't give you a picture with more of your subject sharp because movement will blur it. I can't think of a logical reason to use aperture on a moving subject unless you are wanting blur but then again I would control that by setting the shutter speed to make sure I got the blur I wanted.

LOL, but don't try and tell me you are no longer buying cameras.

My biggest mistake was buying every lens that I thought I might need or use. After a dozen or so I realized that I was being foolish and ended the practice. Anyway, now I have a bunch of lens that I hardly ever use. Now I mostly use a Canon 1.8 and a 70-300 on a 5Dc. I carry my stuff in a leather plumbers bag.

That's what I use, or manual. It's not a mistake. Not understanding how to use any exposure mode, well, that's another story.

My biggest mistake was taking lousy pictures in the beginning - not due to bad exposure settings, just bad pictures. It took me a while to develop what passes as a halfway decent aesthetic sense, and 52 yrs later I am still a work in progress.

That resonates with me, as well. When I go back and look at my early photography, I think that my garbage to good ration was about 10:1. Finally, I am learning a lot. And it is really exciting.

I too shoot BIF in aperture priority because I shoot almost everything in aperture priority. F5.6, 1/750,iso 400 achieved with aperture priority is the same as f5.6, 1/750,iso 400 achieved with shutter priority or manual. It’s just different approaches to the same end.

His mistake was shooting Aperture having nothing to do with RAW vs JPG

I advise every one to shoot RAW and JPG and get back to helping him

And why is that? What purpose does the jpeg serve if you have the raw image?

Not reviewing my camera settings before I go out in the field; not remembering to take extra batteries with me.

That wasn’t an early mistake for me. It just happened. On Friday I left Virginia for Florida. I was 5 hours in when I realized I brought two batteries for my Fuji S1 bridge camera, but the third battery was still in the charger, plugged into my wall at home. On Tuesday I’m flying from Tampa to the Bahamas and I knew two batteries wasn’t gonna cut it. When I stopped for dinner Friday night I hit Amazon and shortly after I arrived on Saturday, a charger and two more batteries were delivered to me in Florida.

It's a mistake shooting BIF using aperture mode. I have the proof. My keeper rate is much higher by not using it.

Just because it doesn’t work for you doesn’t constitute proof.

Exactly. I may be setting the fstop but when I do I’m also selecting the shutter speed.
