Looking at scanning some 2 1/4 bw negatives from way back.
I have an Epsom 600 scanner that works fine.
The first scans came out but seem unfinished.

You have to finish them.
Don't know what is unfinished because no example.
I will crop if there are rough edges (For me this is where I have to cut some cardboard for odd shaped very old large negs.)
Also I use ICE to remove dust and flaws.
I also use an Epson scanner.
I use a Canon Scanner. Have a holder that shows 3 negs at a time, or mask down to individual frames. After scanning, the image is opened in Photoshop, and edited before printing, or whatever use I need to make from the scan. Scan to a high resolution, use dust removal option. Any more problems, air them, and see who can help.
I should have included the scan. Here is the scan.
Here is one from a 35mm negative from the same era... mid 70s.
Fun to catch up on some of these old friends from years ago.
This is 5th Avenue, NYC.

What is unfinished about these?
I thought the top one was a little blotchy in the lighter sections. It printed better than it looks here..
Remember those negs are almost 50 years old.
Try this book on scanning, the same guy does have some other books. Including one devoted to neg/slide scanning using the "VueScan" software.
"Scanning Negatives and Slides" by Steinhoff It is a bit pricey but the e-book version is about $20. I have both of his books.
Thanks
I will look into it
I have some more stuff to scan also.
Did you trying moving your DPI up a notch - might help with blotchiness.
Thks
I will try that next pass...
I have some more I want to get to.

When I scan a slide or negative of any size, I then inspect it at 200% and at 50% in gimp; if I see any issues, such as a spot or scratch, I use the editor to fix it. This sort of process seems the natural thing to do to me.
I think you did well. There was a famous photographer in NY called Wege. He always had a Cigar in his mouth. This looks like him?
Don
Thanks... Was a busy time for me.
