OK you guys— you know who you are Savannah is a BIG city. I live in a town of less than 5000 people! We even have a couple of traffic lights! LOL. Not sure I could function in La or NYC. Baby steps man just baby steps!😊

There's only two lights in my town, too, Trekker - one at the main intersection in the middle of town, where the two main roads intersect, and the other is at the junction of one of those main roads and the access road which goes past all the schools, and then re-connects with one of those main roads, just above the P.O.

According to the 2016 census, there was just over 14,000 here. Been here, now - 46 years, after doing the City Life routine when I was younger - first, in NYC (the biggest US City) then in London (Europe's biggest) then in Boston - the biggest city in New England. It was fun, back then - when I was more adventurous. But, I think small town living, now - suits my temperament more than "City Life."

Apologies for the duplication … was knocked off-line during posting, and had not realized it'd gone up!

Sorry to ask the same old question but I do have a twist. I am a country girl have not visited a big city in MANY years. I’m going to Savannah Georgia. I recently bought a used Nikkor 24-70 2.8 I am loving it. I own a Nikkor 28-300 3.5-5.6. Which lens to take (I can only manage one). Left side of my brain says 28-300 good street lens can handle all situations. Right side says oh 24-70 so sharp and fast cities are tight and congested why would you need a long lens.
What To do? Opinions please and thank you!!
Sorry to ask the same old question but I do have a... (show quote)

When I'm not shooting birds my full frame DSLR usually has a 24-70 F/2.8 mounted.
My recent purchase of a Nikon Z6 came with a 24-70 F/4.0 that stays on the camera 90% of the time.
I keep a little Panasonic point and shoot in my car which has an equivalent 24-70 F/1.4 to 2.8

I strongly recommend the 24-70 over the longer zoom for a trip to the city.

Yes, me, too, Trekker … love the country life … not as exciting as the Big City, but so very quiet and restful. Why - in the middle of the night - in the summertime - all you can hear is crickets!!!!

It HAS been an interesting discussion, hasn't it, Trekker - your Topic Post title contributed to much of that!

Yes, do that, Trekker - would love to see some of your pics of Savannah, Georgia … closest I've ever been is Macon - another small town which has grown in recent years - 150,000 in 2017 … where I stayed for a while in the late 70s - AFTER moving to SmallTown, USA - another one of the adventures of my youth sm16: ... and, of course - Atlanta, on the way down through, and on the way back ... it was fun - then!!!

I haven't been for a few years, but it's a great town, except in August where the humidity is so thick you can cut it. I'd take the 28-300, but that's me. Take the carriage tour the drivers are very familiar with the town and go for the house tours. If you are into American Art; the Telfair Museum is not large, but the collection is excellent. We stayed in center Savannah at a Holiday Inn, and it put to shame any Holiday Inn we've ever stayed at. Eating - try The Pink House - excellent regional fair. There is a Chart House there as well; if you've seen one you've seen them all - not. They serve a peach martini that my wife still brings up. I generally go on a harbor tour - I was not impressed at this location.

I still prefer Charleston, but it's not by much. The carriage and home tours there are good as well. If you do go there and like silver jewelry - go to Dacuba jewelry. the owner has a collection of silver rice jewelry and items based on the original Charleston gates. I've gotten out of the dog house on several occasions by getting things from there for her. She has gotten more compliments from other women when she wears it than other more expensive things.

Enjoy your trip!

I'm from rural Wyoming and have a daughter that has lived in NY City for many years. When I visit I almost exclusively use my 28-300. It give you a high degree of flexibility. Some of my better shots have been taken with the upper end of the focal length. Enjoy your trip to the city.

"Georgia cracker

Georgia Cracker refers to the original American pioneer settlers of the Province of Georgia, and their descendants. In the late 19th century and the early part of the 20th century, Georgia ranchers came to be known as "Georgia Crackers" by Floridians when they drove their cattle down into the grassy flatlands of Central Florida to graze in the winter, stopping where the citrus groves began. In order to get the cattle's attention they became very adept at cracking a bullwhip."

Thereyago, Trekker ….

Sure, Trekker … it should be noted, however - it's now considered a derogatory term …

Since Georgia is better known as the Peachtree state - perhaps, a better name would be - "Peachers"

As a telephoto fan, I'd take the longer lens.

Okay, Peaches … but, if you like Crackers, better - here's a sign for you …

BTW - Georgia is the #1 Producer in the Country, of Pecans, and is also a major producer of these, also:
Peaches, Peanuts, Vidalia Onions, and Blueberries … that's quite a legend to have, Trekker …
