Back in the 90's I had a print of myself in camo standing on a mountain top while on outpost guard duty near Qui Nhon holding an M-60. One of my students was in the JrROTC and begged the picture off me to use in an essay he wrote for credit. Later other students said he was showing it to JrROTC from other schools and bragging about how our high school had the toughest teachers in East LA.

Been there (Qui Nhon) many times....used to fly in after a mission to the USO and get a strawberry sundae before returning to the ROK base camp at Lane. In fact passed Qui Nhon a month ago while on a SE Asia cruise, mountains look the same. Welcome Home

I was in country Dec 66 to Jan 69 with the same unit, we went over by ship.
I was the classified document and report clerk & alternate custodian of documents at the Qui Nhon Sub-area Command of 1st Log (593rd GS Gp HHQ Company). So I seldom was allowed to go on outpost, patrol or other TDY assignments. The other people who had the combos kept forgetting them and when the CO wanted something once he sent his driver to fetch me and once borrowed a General's chopper to get me from a remote outpost guarding a mountain pass. I got out to Tiger Town a few times with our Intel Officer and his main contact and friend - Asst Intel Officer of the Cap ROK Infantry Div. When the two of them both got promoted to Major the same week they latched onto me to drive and went for a celebration meal at a Korean Restaurant in the city owned by the Korean officer's father's cousin who had married a French Foreign Legionnaire during the Korean War and moved to Vietnam with him. After about 3 beers the Korean major insisted I have some beer also, in fact he and my major both ordered me to drink beer with them. I stretched one out for over an hour and at some point my major used the radio on the jeep to tell the company I was on official business and would miss that night's guard formation but would be there in time for second shift. I was. After dropping them at the BOQ to sleep off their celebration.
Welcome home to you also.

And I wonder how many people even realize the weight the guy with the M-60 is humping through a brutally hot, steamy jungle while trying to remain alert and ready to act.
