Bess Beetles on Bark - Thanks to Bill

When I was suffering from the winter blahs and cabin fever, Bill was kind enough to send me some specimens to practice and experiment with. These are two Bess Beetles that Bill mounted on a piece of bark as one of those Care Packages. My winter would have been much more dreary had it not been for him.

This image was taken with a Laowa 60mm f2.8 2X Super Macro set at 1:1 due to the size of the piece. Shutter speed set at 1 second @ f5.6 and 287 stacked images. Lighting was provided by two IKEA LED desk lamps kept back a distance with drapes of white packing foam placed midway between them and the subject. Lighting was a bit tricky because the Bess Beetles are quite shiny critters.

Bess Beetles are one of my favorite beetles and they are very social, caring parents and can be easily handled for their photo session when found mostly under rotting deadfall.

This is a beautiful picture, and it showcases your skills in this hobby. It may be your finest work, though I don't know how to judge that.

And thanks to Bill too (copious thanks!) for providing these prepared specimens! I have also benefited from his generosity.

Thank you both for that. Nice start to my day.

Thanks ever so much for the kind responses. I like staged shots that can mimic the natural environment of the specimen and my plans now that warmer weather is arriving is to do more of them similar to this and the few others that I have done.

I'm expecting delivery of some lenses and adapters this week that will provide a different field of view that I'm hoping will make this possible so a little time will tell.
