Just WHAT is a good photograph?

I agree 100%. If the composition is good, it's well exposed and it conveys a message it's a good photograph. Photography is very subjective. I have looked at a few photographs and didn't like them at all. But who am I? These images were made by famous photographers. I know in the years I have been taking photographs for myself and my clients and I have developed a better eye for a good image. Sometimes that means breaking all the rules.

I kmow a lady who has NEVER taken a photography class in her life. Yet she takes awesome photos. She has the eye to see a great one. She took a candid photo of her grandson from behind as he was holding his Tonka tractor at his side while watching a man driving a real tractor in front of him. Below the photo she put a little plaque that simply reads: "SOMEDAY...." This is just one of many of her great award winning shots.

disagree, shakyshutter. Both grammar and spelling count towards being a Master of a language. Also vocabulary. If you don't master the elements of your craft, you won"t be a master. I also believe we should master English to communicate. I've read some postings on this site that were so unreadable that I had no idea that the person was saying. While this is a photographic site it is to a greater extent a communication site. We should at least try. Some people appear to take great pride in their illegibility.

A good photo is a photo that pleases someone. IOW, a pix is worth what you think it's worth. It's value is whatever the buyer and seller agree upon.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So are good photographs. Shoot for what you like and the pictures that help you feel happy and good about yourself. It is all a personal choice. We had a member give a presentation once at the camera club of the most famous 20 images of all time. There were only MAYBE TWO that I would even hang on my wall!! I do hang those that I have a good feeling about, regardless of who has taken them.

If given only one photo that really stirs me it would be Alfred Eisenstaedt's photo of the sailor kissing the nurse at times square on VJ day. It seems to wrap up all the emotions of WW2 in one photo. A thank God it's all over feeling.

Do you know the actual story behind that "kiss?"

Well I have read what Alfred Eisenstaedt wrote about it. I don't know if there is anything else pertinent. If so I would be glad to hear it.

The sailor did not know the nurse at all. They both happened to be at the same place at the same time when news of VJ day hit Times Square. The sailor was so excited, he just turned around and kissed the first person that was close to him. Very romantic, but no relationship came out of it.
I saw an interview with the nurse a few years ago. That was her story. I think the sailor had since passed.
Just a little tidbit.

As everyone can see, 5 pages of answers and most of the answers are different in one way or another. That tells me that NO ONE really knows what makes a good photo/photographer, and NO ONE will ever know. As it was stated a couple of times, Photography is subjective.

Well I guess we still don't have a definitive of what a good photo is but I think everyone had a good time trying. One thing about it, it shows the old saying that difference of opinion is what makes horse races holds true to more than horse races.
