Hello All. A friend of mine has used Photoshop Elements 7 for a very long time. The PC operating system is Windows 7 Home with Service Pack 1. Photoshop 7 now refuses to open despite all suggested attempts to remedy. My friend is in his 80's with considerable memory and cognitive concerns BUT LOVES to work on his pictures / images. He would need to use the same -or very similar - Photoshop interface / procedures and not get confused learning new ones. I was considering getting a new copy of Photoshop Elements and installing after uninstalling his previous version. But I do not know if Version 7 has stopped being supported and that is why it no longer works. If so, what is the best replacement version that is most similar to what he had? ... and will work on older computer running Windows 7 Home with Service Pack 1? Yes, I will contact Adobe but first thought the practical experience of Hedgehogs might give more direction to the search. Thanks for your thoughts.

Might be Elements 7??? Could it have become incompatible with a recent Win 7 update?

Win 7 is still receiving updates as I recently installed some.

I have Elements 14 and 2019 running on two Win 7 boxes with no problems.

I don't know the answer to which newer version is closest to PSE 7. But see if a 30-day free trial of the newest version will work for the computer and your friend. It says Windows 7-compatible here:

Download:

There are some older versions available here:

Not sure if they are available for free trial.

There have been quite a few changes between PSE 7 and the current versions, mainly in where things are. A lot of things that used to be in drop down menus have moved the Guided edits section.

There's all kinds of possible issues for why the PSE7 software stopped working, many that have nothing to do with PSE7 nor even a Win7 compatibility issue. Does he have the original install file and could try re-installing? That's a free option that costs nothing but time. I "happily" run PSE9 on one Win10 computer and PSE10 on another, but I was meticulous in keeping the install files when the the software was purchased. Going to the market place to find a software install file at any place other than Adobe is risky, with a likely outcome being that you spend money, but get nothing that actually works.

I have recently done quite a bit of research on this. Adobe Photoshop Elements is only available to purchase (from Adobe, B&H Photo, Adorama and Amazon) in its newest 2019 edition. Adobe may still be supporting some previous versions, but they are only selling the 2019 edition.

Hi CHG Canon. part of the cognitive concerns has stopped my friend from locating his original installation disks. but we will keep looking. Your other advice /warning duly noted - Thanks.

Do be careful to say Photoshop Elements 7 or PSE7. There was Photoshop 1 -7, before the later Photoshop CS1-6 Series. Ps1 was from 1990?

I currently run Windows 7, 64 bit, with all the current updates installed and have both PSE 7 and 10 that I use on a daily basis with no problems. If your friend doesn't do much in the way of video editing or special effects on photos, I see no reason for him to abandon his PSE 7. If he still has the disc for PSE 7, perhaps he should uninstall the program and then re-install it from his disc. I see no reason why it should not run properly with Windows 7.

I used PSE7 on my computer that is Windows 7 and a couple years ago I upgraded to PSE9. I had no trouble with the upgrade and both worked fine on my computer. I think the suggestion to uninstall and reinstall. I am sure it will work.

This has probably already been suggested above, but assuming he still has the serial number and CDs, you may want to uninstall PSE 7 and then reinstall it. I am assuming that everything else is working fine on his computer.

Back to your original question, I can appreciate his concern about not wanting to start on a new learning curve. I have had several clients with the same concerns. If you have to end up upgrading PSE, I would try to find a copy of PSE 10. PSE 11 introduced the new look and feel, which would require a fair amount of getting use to on his part. There is no doubt that ultimately the new look and features would probably provide a better experience all the way around, but it would take some time and effort on his part.

The final thought I have is if he upgraded to PSE 10, he would have three years of improvements in the new version. If your friend uses the Organizer, newer versions would automatically upgrade the Catalog to run on the new version.

I am assuming that someone can suggest where to buy a valid copy of older versions of PSE.

Good luck,

FWIW
