I have one of these lenses. I like the lens but it's prone to this kind of failure. Take it to someone and they'll replace a cable and board in the lens and it will work like new. Mine has done this twice in the ten years I've owned it. I'd like to replace it, but the repair is way less than a new lens.

If you search on this lens and order by price, you'll see lots of examples of the cable that is weak.

Who do you recommend for the repair? I'm a little concerned Canon may be grossly over priced.

Depends on where you live. I live in the SF Bay area, and know of a good place in the city and one in Oakland. If you're nowhere near me, that's not any help.

I found the guy in Oakland by searching on Yelp and reading the reviews. The guy in the city was recommended by a photo store.

We don't have a photo shop of any kind near here that does repairs. Two years ago I sent the Rebel XSi to a guy in Colorado that was recommended here on UH. It took him three months to get it back to us then I had to remind him I had also sent the battery charger on his request as he did not originally return it with the camera. I don't mind sending it off somewhere, I just need some kind of assurance it will get fixed properly and in a timely manner and at a fair price.

We just returned from the Texas Hill Country where the bluebonnets were spectacular this year. About half way through the 5-day shoot, the Canon 80D with 17-85 (less than 2 years old) started throwing the error code 01 "Communication between the camera and lens is faulty." I cleaned the contacts on both a couple of times to no avail. We tried the lens on the Rebel XSi and got the same code. Here's the odd thing; it only happens from 17mm to 35mm. When zoomed beyond 35, the lens and cameras work perfectly.

Just wondering if anyone has seen this same problem and if there is a DIY fix outside of cleaning contacts.

thanks all.

This is a defective flex cable that connects to the power diaphram. They are designed to flex as the lens moves in and out. Unfortunately, they have a lifespan. They will only flex so many times before they crack when bent. The lens may work fine if it is in a position where the traces in the flex will make contact and provide the right signal to the camera. either the flex needs to be replaced or the entire power diaphram. The part is available and fairly inexpensive.

My name is Rick. I’m the owner and lead technician at Discount Camera Repair and a member in good standing here at the UHH. I’ve been doing repairs for other members here at greatly discounted rates and would be glad to help.

I'd be more than happy to repair your lens for you and keep the cost as low as possible. If you’re interested, please respond by private message.

I'm not sure if you are referring to me or not. I'm the repair guy in Colorado. My records show that your camera had extensive damage and several parts need to be replaced. Parts orders take a little time especially if one of the parts are on back order. This is what my records show :

REPLACED SHUTTER, IMAGE SENSOR AND LOW PASS FILTER AND TOP COVER. CLEANED AND CHECKED ALL FOR GOOD WORKING ORDER.

Your repair took a couple of months to get all the parts necessary to get your camera working again. Most repairs will take a couple of weeks if no parts are required.

How is your camera working now?

The Rebel is working fine. I wasn't trying to diss you, that's why I didn't mention any names. Since I have other lenses, the lag time on this isn't nearly as critical as when we were without the camera for so long (and we now have the 80D). I'll make further contact once we finish a shoot next Saturday where we are planning on using the lens in question and just shooting above 35mm.
