“what goes on behind scenes” that is appalling?
Working and living quarters conditions, extremely low pay, disregard of environmental laws, blatant up selling of services to passengers and a host of other issues.
I always love it when a mega company like this caught for serious violations issues a statement like," "Our environmental (you can substitute pubic health, public safety, etc.) responsibility has been and continues to be a top priority for the company." (quote from article)
Yeah, sure. My "top priority" is to become a billionaire astronaut philanthropist. Doesn't mean it's ever going to happen, though.
Once again this shows that businesses cannot be trusted to self-regulate. State and Federal enforcement agencies may be slow and inefficient but for most of us, they're all the protection we have.
Beyond the pollution issues, if you have been to Bar Harbor in the last few years you will be aware of how the cruise industry can destroy the ambiance of any port to disgorging a thousand or more traveller into a small town. Magnify that by 2 or 3 ships in port at the same time. For that reason we will never return to Mount Desert Island during the cruise season.
Apparently I’m very much in the minority here. I have been on a number of cruises and continue to feel they are the ultimate vacation; you pack your belongings, get on the ship, unpack and let them take you to many places you only dream about while being pampered and waited upon, and dining on gourmet cuisine.
I do agree that anyone considering a cruise should research their choices carefully, but it is a gross generalization to paint the entire industry with the same brush based on the news reports of a single cruise line.
I have sailed on several different cruise lines, but not on Carnival so I can’t speak from personal experience with that line. However, I had decided early on in my cruising that Carnival was a line I would never use, but for other reasons than stated in this posting.
Some may not care for the overcrowding of a venue when a cruise ship is in port, but there are a number of cruise destinations whose economies are almost solely dependent on those cruise passengers.

And that protection is rapidly disappearing under the current administration.
Calculate how much money the cruise industry puts into the places they visit.

What was the protection before?

I have never gone on a cruise, have one planned for June on the Columbia River by American Cruise Lines. Wonder if they are affiliated with Carnival?
Who cares? Enjoy yourself.

Check out the changes that the EPA is making re clean air and clean water.
We did the Columbia River cruise in 2017. Great cruise, scenic, the tours were good, and so was the food. I don't believe American Cruise lines has any connection with Carnival. Enjoy your cruise.

Thanks for the input. I do not think that ACL would be so stupid as to dump any type of waste in the river. We are really looking forward to this vacation to get out of the horrible Denver area with all their crime and dealings with the new marijuana laws and influx of deviants who want to get rich over it. No TV and some rest time away from the city influences.
