We are considering an extended driving trip this summer, from Arizona to the east coast, and are totally unfamiliar with anything east of the Rockies. Indianapolis is a definite stop (family), and Washington, DC is a definite stop, for obvious reasons. What are the highlights between the two cities (direct or indirect route)?

Look at Ricketts Glen State Park in eastern Pennsylvania. 20+ waterfalls. I always park at the bottom in a small lot that is somewhat hidden. Walking in at the bottom will give you the easiest access to the most falls(see attached map). You can do the whole loop but you could spend 3-4 days here with ease.

It is about a half-hour north of I-80. Can be muddy if it rains and there is some climbing on rock steps that are reasonably safe, but they have not poured stairs like you might find in a big national park. The entire park is heavily forested but on top of the hill where the formal entry is located is much more developed.

To give you and idea of the steepness, the Hwy 487 up the west side of the park has a 16% grade from the bottom level to the top where the formal entry is located.

There are numerous motels/hotels along I-80 in the Bloomsberg area.

This is a park that just keeps on giving.

There are 31 covered bridges in Parke County, IN. Might be worth a stop if you're a bridge fan.

Blue ridge parkway. With the trip you’ve planned, you’d better stock up on memory cards.

The US Air Force Museum in Fairborn Ohio, just off I-70. AWESOME collection of aircraft and missiles. Takes a full day to see it all.

For what it is worth, just to the west of Indianapolis is Springfield where the Lincoln Presidential Museum is located. In Dayton, OH, besides the Air Force Museum, there is Carillon Park that contains the industrial history of Dayton and the 1905 Wright Flyer III.

I enjoy going to the high points of states (especially the easy ones) and visited the high points of Kansas, Nebraska, Indiana and Ohio in late 2017 taking some furniture to my brother in Dayton.

While you are in DC, Baltimore's Inner Harbor with the National Aquarium, is close.

In Pennsylvania - Hershey, Gettysburg, Philly(Masonic Temple very interesting), Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Waters (interesting but well off the beaten path), Steamtown. And, that’s just places that come to mind.

Cleveland, Ohio is the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Found out this because I had a layover in Cleveland on a flight from Indianapolis to LA. Strange I had to go east to get to a 747 to LA. Actually flew on a prop plane to Cleveland from Indianapolis. Did not have time to go to the Hall of Fame, but there were adds in the terminal.

Thanks for your comments. What I am particularly interested in are possible photo ops BETWEEN Indianapolis and Washington DC. I have already planned the trip to Indianapolis, and plan to stop in a number of places, particularly in Utah and Colorado. Also, I already know what I want to do in Washington DC. Should I blaze through eastern Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania in one day, or will I need several days to fully experience the trip? Is one route more scenic than another? What side trips, if any, are recommended in those states?
Thanks for your comments. What I am particularly ... (show quote)

I loved Amish country, around Lancaster, PA. Pretty country, well keep farms, covered bridges and massive combines and other farm equipment being pulled by a team of horses. Philadelphia also has lots opportunities with all the history.
