On a recent trip to the dentist in a nearby town in rural Oklahoma, I saw this Palomino mare and her young Appaloosa colt in the pasture next to the highway. They were very cooperative in letting me photograph them. I thought I would share one of my photos and ask for your comments. Do you have a favorite horse color? How could this photo. be improved ? Thanks.

As for a favorite color, probably sorrel or chestnut with good markings. That has been a conversation for years but it seems that bay color is preferred by some as some argue that you get the most desirable traits for working horse in that color.

I have a lovely chestnut now, but my all time favorite has been dark bay. The grey I had was gorgeous when he was clean for shows but high maintenance.

Check out the Emerald City for a horse of a different color. Just follow the Yellow Brick Road.

Appaloosa, for sure - the more spots the better! Improvement: go back an hour or so before sunset to get the light lower on the horizon - even better when there is a golden glow in the sky; it will warm the subjects, thus improving the 'storyline'. DOF good; but move so that the distracting elements in the background are eliminated - then crop to tighten up the scene. After getting a few good shots - zoom in closer to capture her colt in a tender moment.

Buckskin, dark muzzle, ears, tail, and socks. I'd settle for a dappled grey.

What is that black spot above the mother horse tail?
Looks better to crop it out.
