Great photo, I don't think overprocessed at all!

My mom/ new grandma stopped by over the weekend on a dreary afternoon so the natural colors were a little on the cool side, but at one point, sitting in front of the window, I noticed my 2-month-old peacefully passed out on Gramma's chest. I took a snap, softened it a bit and warmed it up, and I have to admit I really like it. Interestingly, reception to it on IG and the socials has been a little more tepid than I would have expected. Not to say I'm hunting for likes (I'm really not, honest) but I expected a little more response - people generally love babies after all

My first instinct is that I overdid the PP a little. I'm getting back in to the post-processing thing after a few years out so I feel like I'm still getting my eye back. What are the group thoughts on the before and after?

I sort of did my rendition of the picture .... “where Angels rest”

You took what was a very nice image and made it into something truly special!

I'm leaning toward the first one. It appears more natural.

Have you tried a closer crop? That would make the faces more prominently. I also like the light on the baby’s face in the original

Processed version is much more ethereal, with the emotion you must have felt when shooting. The original is far too harsh, and deprives us of the grandmother's expression of love for her grandchild. I would have gotten my D750 to shoot that ethereal look in-camera by setting to "Portrait" and "Cloudy" light balance.

Between the two I favor the unprocessed photo. I merged these two with 70% of the sooc, with a slight crop. Its a really wonderful shot which could be processed and cropped in an infinite number of ways. Its about how you want it to be. You may come up with a number of different valid finished versions, each one giving a different emphasis.

The original just needed a bit of lightening of the Grand Moms face and a bit of suppression of the highlights on Baby’s face. The colors look a little muddy in the post processed one. I do like how you darkened the window in the post processed one. All just my opinion.

First, the shot is fantastic as far as the capturing emotion of the scene. The original is too harsh I think, too much blue? and babies face is lit a bit funny. The PP is better, but perhaps a little too soft, a little too much yellow?. GM face is way too dark, I would like her brightened up some. She is as much the focus as the baby, her expression is super important to the photo. As far as the cropping, I think its fine. My focus is on Baby and GM, and I would have to go back and look at the pic to see what else was in there.

So I guess I like both, or dislike both, depending on your view of my view.
My view however is worth what you paid for it.

You have a winner here. In photography, positively nothing beats the subject of an infant asleep in the arms of an adoring grandma.

Partly for this reason, I processed your family photograph in black-and-white, from the tradition in this genre.

I started in Adobe Camera Raw and picked a B&W filter that did justice to the subject. In the full Photoshop, I cropped the image as one-to-one (square) because this farming best served the composition.

I could've done more, like a warming tint. But I stayed conservative here to give you a sense of the potential for this fine photograph.

One sure can fall deeper and deeper into PP. I'm on a learning curve myself so take my comments accordingly. I like the natural light from the window giving a soft uneven effect that captures the emotion of the moment. I'd accentuate that. I'd start in Lightroom, turn on the blinkies, pull white all the way up until it shows lost highs, then move highlights to the left until it looks right. Same on blacks, pull them down until it blinks, then pull shadows to the right a bit. At the curve setting I would start with the medium contrast pull down, then click the top left of the histogram where you can click on the image to adjust that part. I'd click on grandma's face in the light and pull that up a tiny bit so the s shaped curve is a little curvy-er.

I prefer the original and I feel the window shows where the light is from which also adds to the back ground esp. in the 1st. shot-nice capture!

I'm no expert but the original is the one I prefer. Even with Grandmas face a little dark the babies face is bright and stands out, which I think Grandma would like. In my opinion some cropping to emphasize the two subjects would improve things.

Agree. The "cooked" pic is too much toward daylight correction. In my view, I prefer the warmer tone of the original. I'm mostly biased toward uncorrection [real word?]. What I would have done is taken multiple shots with under to slightly over exposure and pick the one that sets the mood not so much as though the setting was outdoors as an intimate indoor setting.
