You won't be too far from Monticello, Jefferson's home that is nice to also. At James Madison's home there is still an ink stain on the floor where he spilled ink. How cool is that.

0Please check to see if the park and its attractions will be fully open. Nashville news said yesterday to check with the GSNP because of the long government shutdown, they are way behind getting the winter damage cleaned up and a lot of the park will not be open by Easter. Don't know about the other parks in the area or further north. Just passing on what we heard. A phone call may save a disappointing trip.

A man from Fredericksburg who spoke at Richmond Camera Club has written an e-book on Photographic tips for the Park. You can find it on Amazon. Sorry I can't recall his name , but I am away from my computer. The author is a real enthusiast. Worth looking for.

I am pretty sure you mean Andy Sentipal. He is a good shooter and a good friend. He is truly a photographic expert of the Park.
I will copy some script here from our club newsletter.
Andy has published an e-book called the “Shenandoah National Park Photography Guide”. It’s available for download on Amazon Kindle and Apple I Tunes for $9.99. The book has over 50 pages covering a variety of subjects including wildlife, landscapes, waterfalls, panoramas, sunrise/sunset, stars/Milky Way, macro and Fall foliage. It also covers information about the best overlooks, including foreground element descriptions.

I meant to add... Based on UHH advice and my own research, Shenandoah valley sites we aim to visit include Luray Caverns, Monticello (not quite in the valley), Museum of Shenandoah Valley (Winchester VA), Humpback Rocks, FrontierCulture Museum and any other interesting site we see along the way. Not sure how far south you're going but if you hit the Blue Ridge Parkway, UHH recommended "most see" sites include Peaks of Otter, Explore Park, Roanoke Mountain and, of course, Mabury Mill.

I’ve been to all the Shenandoah Valley places you mentioned- I live in the Valley Good choices! Grand Caverns is another place we like- not as many visitors unless you pick a day when there is a school field trip.

There is so much to see in Shenandoah you can fill your week up easily but for something different you may want to extend and get into the Blue Ridge which is immediately south of the Park. Unlike Skyline there are roads that you can take off the Parkway that lead down I too the valley on either side. They are mostly dirt and may offer Alpine type exposure of the country side. They are narrow and in some spots do not have room for two cars to pass although I never saw another car in any of these roads. If it was me I would take one day leave Skyline pre dawn and make a day of it. Dawn would be th sheet time to see bear and Turkey etc on the Drive. I assume deer are still plentiful just about any time of day.I

I was spent this winter but between the shutdown and a bad idea storm the southern part of Skyline was closed as was most of the Blue Ridge. ENjoy

I hiked the Old Rag trail a number of times from the mid 60s until the early 2000s. I believe the trillium will be in bloom there the 1st weekend of May, and it can cover large patches of the mountain. It's a popular hike and the trail may be crowded, especially on weekends. As another poster mentioned, the rock scramble at the top is quite rough and challenging, though the views are stunning. Secure your gear close to your body and expect to use both hands to help if you decide to hike the whole trail.

Just south of I-64 on Blue Ridge Parkway is the pioneer homestead exhibit. If you go on weekend day there should be volunteers doing reenactments. It is an easy and pleasant walk around with some good photo opportunities.

Hello, folks....

Heading in early May to Shenandoah for a week May 8-14; staying 6 nights at Skyland on the Drive as a base for daily hikes to waterfalls, scenic overlooks, wildlife. Haven't been to Shenandoah since the mid-70s when my wife and I would camp at Big Meadows. To say I'm excited is an understatement!!

I have, all Nikkor, 10-20 w.a.; 35 1.8; 18-300; and my brand new GAS toy 200-500. camera is D5500. my backpack is ready, my tripod is ready; my spirit is ready; my legs are getting there. I'll look to photograph all manner of mushrooms, spring flowers, waterfalls, distant ranges, maybe a bear or two (at a distance!)...whatever is there. Even should I not have gear with me, it will be a spiritual renewal for me.

Should I take everything? What areas should I not miss? During the days I'm there, I'll drive the whole Drive; but always back to Skyland for food and sleep. trails I recall are to Old Rag, Stony Man, BlackRock overlook...whiteoak canyon falls.

Laptop will go along to nightly downloading.... Can't wait!!! Tips, etc. sought.

Thanks, Lou
