Yeah, F-4's were/are amazing birds. I worked on the fire control RADAR systems when I first was in the Navy. As for the photo, I think there was some photo shopping involved. Aircraft looks amazing but something wrong with the environment.
Great shot. I have to disagree with some comments questioning the validity of the shot. All the "ground" is out of focus which tells me that it is a fair distance behind the F-4. An interesting crop.
Personal story: for a few months I worked in a temporary office at the western end of the runway at Ramstein Airbase. When F-4 2-ships took off, the sound was deafening. All conversation ceased.

Good start on the fake aspect. One of the factors is the ground. Why is the F4 so sharp when the ground under it is out of focus?
Shtterbug243 ...can you add some more details regarding this amazing shot ... date taken ..distance to target and lens .., enquiring minds want to know ..
Got most of the data ...lens and camera missing ...., but what a shot ...you might want to print .., frame and deliver to the base .., if you haven’t already done so ... I’d be glad to do it when I’m back in Prescott ..if I have your permission to download ..print and frame ..., your name would be shown as the photographer ..
Exhaust heat waves. I'm not stating that as a fact. Probably more emulation of heat waves than anything else.

IMHO it looks better as a small image rather then downloaded.

What a great shot of my favorite war plane. I was stationed at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base in 1971. I worked on EC-121s which were radar equipped. But, they also had F-4s there (and 105s). What a thrill to watch them take off at night. Awesome sight, I'll never forget.
Then image was taken in Oct. of 2005, camera was Canon 20D, lens Canon 100-400, I was probably about 200 yds. You can use the image if you give me credit and provide places where used. I'm not happy with the background as there was a wildfire going on at the time and smoke or haze. If I had your email I could send you a copy of the original, the image you see has been cropped quit a bit.

I was shooting in TV mode with a burst @ 10 fps and panning fast with the aircraft.
I was a weapons mechanic on F4s in 'nam. Still have nightmares.
