Long time ago I had an cast aluminum plate about 10" x 12" with a 1/4-20 thread which could be mounted to my Bogen tripod. I used this to hold a Kodak Carousel slide projector. This allowed correct axis to a screen for undistorted viewing of slides. I recently looked for mine but must have been lost in moving. Does anyone know if these are still made. I've searched without success. Thank you.
PS, I searched for mine to better align lens and focus pyramid for calibrating my lenses.
The projector platform I made was a piece of 3/8” plywood and a threaded flanged 1/4-20 insert in the center of the board. It mounts easily on my tripod. Since I had all the pieces laying around it was a quick and very inexpensive project. I have found it to be a very handy projector stand. If you cannot find the insert, a counterbore hole part way thru the plywood sized to take a 1/4-20 nut will work.

I think the item that will fit in a board is called a T nut.

I think the item that will fit in a board is called a T nut and is readily available at hardware stores.
A make shift plywood one works great. But if you insist on an aluminum one, a machine shop can probably make one for you.
The item you guys are speaking about is called a 'T' nut. It comes in several sizes, 1/4 20 being the most common. It is exactly what you do not want. Put a standard course machine bolt in it and it fits, then screw a galvanized bolt in and it will work, not what you want. 'T' nuts work as a counter compression device, like anchoring a heavy steel device to a wooden pallet, it is what these are design for and only this application.
The item you want is a exterior threaded nut that once matched to the properly drilled hole in wood, is then driven tightly into place using an Alan wrench, that is inserted in the center where the standard machine threads are also located. You will find these in individual packages in the area where fasteners are sold in Home Depot and Lowell's. Just ask for assistance.
In response to the projector platform comments I had made, I should clarify that the T-nut needs to be installed with the flange on the top side of the platform board. The Tripod 1/4-20 screw is treaded into the T-nut from the bottom side of the platform, pulling down on the the flange nut, securing the platform board on the tripod head.
