I am assuming you have a DX camera since this is a DX lens. So you maximum reach would be an equivalent focal length of 210 mm. Which, in my opinion, is not a birding lens, not even close. Yes, it would make a good all around lens to carry all day cause it is lite. But in my opinion, it lacks the range for serious birding, unless you put you bird feeder right outside the window.
If you do mostly birds, the new Nikon 75-300 would be a much better choice but is limited at the wider end for family.

I have the 18-140 and really like it. However after getting the 18-300 3.5-6.3 I rarely have it on my camera. I like the extra reach of the 18-300. They are pretty much the same weight and size. They filter is the same size.

The 3.5/5.6 is very limited. Consider a longer focal length as well. If you ever decide to go full frame the DX leans is useless.

The Nikon 18-140mm was the main lens on my D7100 for three years. It is a great travel lens, and it will serve you well for family pictures.
However, 140mm (210mm full frame equivalent) is not long enough for bird photography. I would be reluctant to go with a superzoom (say 18-400mm) as you invariably lose image quality. So I would get a dedicated telephoto zoom that gets you into the 400+ mm range that will give you great bird images.

Nikon 1 J5 with Ft-1 adapter and Nikon 18-300mm VR, or 28-300mm VR.
Fits the bill perfectly. I use the Nikon 1 V1. Has a viewfinder.

At 140 and at 30' distance you will have a field of view of about 5' x 3 1/2'. That’s not much for small birds. You’ll need to plan on being closer to get a decent subject size.

You may also consider a new camera bag, tripod and heck, possibly a new car.

Hi! I bought this to replace the 18-105mm "kit" lens that came with my D7000. I find it sharper than my original lens, and is my every day go-to lens for most landscape and people photos. Probably a little "short" for wildlife. I'd get one again, but probably get a refurb instead of paying full price for new. Never had an issue with it.

Best walk about lens for me is the Tamron 18-400. Covers just about all my needs. . . .

The Nikkor 18-140 is actually the sharpest of all comparable according to dx-o mark. It is my walk around lens...on the camera 99 % of all time. It is a big misconception that “plastic” lenses are fragil. I dismantled an old 80-200 mm plastic lens that was broken and not worth repairing. I was totally impressed how durable the “plastic” was. Really hard to break! Modern plastic is extremely strong and durable! Ken Rockwell stated that the 8-140 mm had a lot of distortion...maybe so, but you can set auto distortion control “on” and this will do a fantastic job reducing pincushion and barrel distortion! You of course need to have the latest firmware installed.
I never shoot birds so I have no opinion which lens you need for that, but the 18-140 mm is one of the best everyday lenses you can chose!
I highly recommend this lens...it’s very sharp and affordable!

Dxomark has tested this lens. It performs best on a D500. (You can enter what camera body you have and see how it performed on that body. I have a D7100 and it tests not as well.)
Here is the test on sharpness from dxomark (when mounted on a D500).
I own the lens, but no longer use it because it is mediocre at best.
