Workhorse Lens.

I'm looking to buy an all around lens to use for impromptu shots when I'm driving or walking around, but not for specified use. In short a "workhorse" lens. Right now for that those purposes I'm using a Canon 18 - 55mm kit lens (which is for the birds) and an old Canon 28 - 80 lens which vinyets excessively when I extend it. I am open to any ideas.
My walk around lens on my D3400 is a Tamron 28-75 f2.8. Good for low light and 42-112mm FF equivalent. My Tamron 18-200 f3.5-6.3 stays on my Nikon D50. Good all around lens for nice days and 27-300mm FF equivalent. Soon to acquire a like new Nikon D90 to use with a Tamron 17-50 f2.8. He’ll fit in between with a 25-75mm FF equivalent. My camera use depends on where and when I’m going.

24 to 35mm prime ff... 35 to 50mm prime crop.
Learn to frame and compose. Amaze yourself.
I recently purchased a Canon 35 mm f1.4 L II for my 5D M 4. The results have been amazing. I still use my 24-105 f4 L, but the IQ is not quite as good. The low light capability of the 35 mm f1.4 coupled with the 5D M4 is a great combination for no flash inside photography. Long live the primes!
My Nikkor 24-70-2.8 is almost always mounted on my Nikon D-800. Sometimes not short enough and at times not long enough. But a great combo in my opinion. Happy Shooting.
I agree. In fact, I own and use the Sigma version of a lens with this zoom range.

That's pretty close to 17-70 on an APS-C.
I use a Tamron 28-80 on my Canon film and Digital cameras works well sharp for my liking and a 80-200 for wildlife birds etc. another good lens for me other may disagree but I haven't got a bad shot yet except for operator error. I have other cameras with other lenses for them Like my my Nikon I use the 35-70 AF and very sharp but I mostly use my Canon 20d for ease and frugality these days and so not to waste film and use film for more adventurous photography and depending on my mood a nice nifty 50 will always work as well
Mine is a Nikon 18-200, works well to get those close shots as well a moderate distance ones, just wish it was a bit faster in low light. If the walk around is in a museum then a 50mm, 35mm or a 18-55. They work well at reasonable cost, which always is an issue.

My f1.4 - 35mm ASPH lens on any of my Leicas is a "killer" lens.

I'm impressed with your arm, shoulder and neck strength if you use a 70-200 f2.8 lens as a walk-a-round!
No strength needed, they just hang there! Its just like hanging anything on a nail, you hang it there and stop thingking about it,, I hang it around my neck and its the same!
