A dog's hearing and smell is so much better than a humans, I think it's more like what the dog is hearing and smelling rather than what it's seeing.
Who cares. I would pay attention, there might be a stalking mountain lion just over the edge
Dogs senses are supernatural compared to a persons' senses. Could be anything, but I would be checking it out.

Actually he could be hearing something, and waiting for it to come over the top of the ridge. A wonderful shot that brings up a myriad scenarios in someone's imagination. Thanks.

It looks to me like he spotted something like a coyote moving in the distance. Possibly an Elk or a Deer.
Or, he's getting even with you for pulling the same thing on him!
