I was hiking on Sunday when my buddy took a picture of me with his brand new Canon G9X ii. He put it on Facebook and was asked what's with the blue outline around me. He replied it was the sun because he was shooting on auto. I just think it's more like a halo around me lol so I had an 8 x 10 print made at Walmart so I can hang it on a wall. So how do you do this effect on auto setting?
It's lens flare, a reflection of the sun off elements in the lens and would happen in any shooting mode.

To recreate the effect, simply position the camera until the effect appears in the viewfinder or on screen, whichever you are using to compose the shot. Essentially, what you see is what you get. (If you are using a DSLR camera, you may need to hit the DOF preview button, as the aperture may be different when you actually take the shot.) Location of the sun within the composition will be the important factor.
So it should be fairly easy to do this anytime? I don't think I have ever seen a photo quite like this. Actually I have never seen a blue circle around anybody when I went to take their picture. But then again I wasn't looking for it. My plumber was here to collect some money and I showed it to him and he said it made him think of Skinwalker Ranch where they have these orbs especially blue ones. They are supposed to be dangerous, so he said I should be careful. I'm going to have to ask my friend again just how he did it. When I find out I will post his answer.
Yes, on any sunny day I have found shooting into the sun but about 20° to the left works best. (Maybe to the right too but for some reason don't get as pleasing look). It can go from circle to pentagon or octogen dependent on aperature setting and may show up yellow, red or bluish dependent on lens coating and internal lens elements. You will easily see which in the viewfinder and can control where they fall by changing vertical or horizontal axis of the lens.
Exactly, that was my whole point. I have texted to my friend to ask what he saw in his viewfinder screen at the time and he hasn't answered. I think it means I am going to change my handle to "Saint Ishmael". I consulted my paranormal investigator lady and she said "It means you have a lot of energy." I am very interested in "spirit" photography, something like that guy Josh Gates does on his travel channel program. When my plumber friend was here we were trading ghost stories.
Maybe you were just feeling blue that day. Or maybe it was "once in a blue sun." : )
You are special or....radioactive ......oh no
HHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Have you tried walking on water yet?
Probably not....still Frozen I'd guess.
You could add this effect with Photoshop using a number of techiniques - masking layer, etc.
I love the sun and the snow.I can feel the crisp cold air,but I don’t think you’ll be eligible for Sainthood
due to some lense flare.(is that Bigfoot behind you in the woods?)

Interesting you felt it was a special effect where many people would consider it a flaw.
I'm sure my friend did not do that effect on purpose. So I was being silly. Maybe this only happens once in a blue moon.
It was your buddy's camera sensor exploding from direct UV blue rays. Now it is irreparably burned into his sensor. LOL
