Hoggers:
I have an elderly Gentleman from my church who has two lenses he wants to find a good home for?

1) A Canon FD 50mm 1: 1.8 appears to be in excellent condition, not scratched or worn looking.

2) A Vivatar 75-205mm 1: 3.8 MC Macro Focusing Zoom which has the small metal connector on side of lens barrel which engages the appeture pin which rotates from under the Nikon Logo on the F series, back in the day?

He wants $75.00 for the two lenses I would think they would be worth that at least, even for use as trading options. I think a USPO M/O would be proper for him.
He is a retired U. S. Marine Colonel and just a wonderful American. You now know as much as I do. They are in great shape as far as I can see!
Respectfully Submitted,
Sonny

Many of the Vivitar lenses of that era were actually remarkable in that, although they produced lenses that had "ears" for A mounts, while being machined for AI and/or AIS mounts. Does the Vivitar have a red line around the far end?

Mogul:
The Vivitar does not have a red ring at all.

I believe what you say because when looking down into the barrel thru the lens front, the construction just looks wonderful. Not a scratch, I only wish I had something it would fit?
Thanks for your response.

Not worth $75...Go on eBay & look at the "completed" listings for each lens. The Canon lens might be worth more than the Vivitar but it requires an adapter to be able to be used with any camera body (pain in the pototee). There are scores of that same Vivitar out on eBay..Can likely be used on current Nikon DSLR's if it"s an Ai mount (as opposed to Pre-Ai),but , like I said, a common item on eBay...

Since you have offered so much valued information and the proposed value came from the owner, what in your expert opinion are the lenses worth. I am just trying to assist him in any manner I can.
Thank you,
Sonny

Just checked those eBay listings. The Canon lens had a number of sales (out of 329 listings, & 156 sales) ranging from $6.50 to about $25. I only went back through the 50 most recent listings ...How much they went for likely varied depending on the advertised condition & whether or not caps or other accessories were included. As for the Vivitar lens, there were 32 listings, but only 4 were sold & none were sold in Nikon's mount, just Pentax & Canon. The Pentax mount went for $6.54 & the Canon went for more, but included the camera in one case...The range was from $20 to $121.38. Like I said though the most money came from the one that included a camera, flash & another lens. There was one in Canon mount that went for $47.99, but the seller wasn't entirely honest with his listing saying it would fit digitals, but did not mention that you would need an adapter with a lens in it to achieve infinity focus & that you would be limited in what metering options you had...

Thank you very much for Your help!

Maybe I will see if I can find out which adapter I would need to use the Vivitar on an old Canon 10 D and use it when I go birding in the Everglades!
Thanks, again!
Warmly,
Sonny

Hmmm... I must have missed something. I thought the lenses I was comparing were "T" mount. Since I was only comparing specs, I wasn't concerned about mount.

Sorry about that, Sonny. I was working on two different thoughts here. Could you please post a "tail-on" shoot of the Vivitar mount I wonder if it's been modified for AI or AIS operation. Many older lenses were retrofitted by machining those bases. AI retrofit was fairly easy to accomplish; AIS was harder, but both jobs could be done with a Dremel Moto-Tool.

Ok I am a newbie at this ... I have been taking photos of dog shows and inside sporting events... but I need a low light/Freeze action lens... which folks have been saying is the Numbers this lens has... but I have a Canon 40D and I need to know if this lens will fit on my camera... after years of doing this as a hobby I want to start getting better lens to get sharper/cleaner pics as I want to be a PRO ... I have put my foot in the water and the start of a new adventure is beginning :) If the lens fits... what price would it be? plus shipping to MN thanks for the info... and thank him for his service to our nation too.

I am not familar with the 40 D. I have a 10 D and it is to small for my camera. If you bought the 40 D from a shop, just call them and ask if the 50MM will fit yours. I wish I could answer your question for sure?

I will see what I can find out for you also.
Thanks for your interest.

I would also think that for dog shows you might also want something in the 28-135 range in a zoom? Fixed 50mm for the dogs on a table sounds about right.
Let me know what you find out?
Col said he would take $25.00 plus $10.00 shipping from you because you sound so nice and he likes folks from Minnesota!

awww that is so sweet of him... I shall try to find out on my end about the lens and my camera... what are all the NUMBERS and Letters on the lens so I can get the correct information to my camera store man... how old is the lens... if the Col. knows... I have just started this whole Pet PRo Photographer by faith last month, I have been doing it as a hobby... but took the leap of faith... so far things are working out in my favor... getting good reviews from folks ...like it is about time... etc. Nice feeling.
