This is my first attempt at macro with dslr. Did a lot with 35mm in the 80's. This is new Tamron 70-300 macro on Nikon D7000. If it works this well in the field, I will be content. C&C are always welcomed. Ray
Two characteristics separate a true macro lens from all other lenses:
1.) Flat Field-of-Focus, which keeps flat subjects in focus, corner to corner. Regular lenses have a curved FoF, similar to the curve of the lens' front element.
2.) 1:1 magnification (life-size) at Minimum Focusing Distance, without the aid of tubes or additional lenses.
Per Tamron website
http://www.tamron.co.jp/en/lineup/a005/spec.html , your lens has a maximum mag. ratio of 1:4 (1/4 life-size) at an MFD of 1500-mm (1.5-meters).
It is possible to crop a subject to 1:1 mag (life-size) in post processing, but not possible to photograph macro without adding extension tubes or more lens.
Also, your D7000 has a sensor size of 23.6-mm x 15.6-mm. If your coin is the size of a dime (17-mm diameter) or larger, then your photo is a close-up, not a macro-photograph.
Specs given by B&H. Never known them to fib.
Mfr # AF017NII-700 The 70-300mm Di LD Macro is a quality compact ultra tele zoom lens which covers the 70mm to 300mm telephoto range, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2 at the tele end. The model # is A17NII
I found your lens here:
http://www.tamron-usa.com/lenses/prod/70300_di_a017.aspMagnification Ratio = 1:2 (1/2 life-size) at MFD of 95-mm (0.95m)
Better, but still not Flat Field, nor true macro capture. Less cropping in PP to arrive at macro field.
What is millimeter diameter of your coin?

34mm
16-mm (height of coin on sensor)/34-mm = .47x = approx. 1:2 = approx 1/2 life-size.
