Took two hours to get this one shot. I have the 400 all set up out the window that faces the fountain in my patio. I never know which side they will land on, so I was trying to zoom in enough to cover the whole water area. However, that left me with a small image of the bird. So, today I zoomed in close and had to guess where they would land. And when she did I had to move the focus point over and fast. Plus, I had to deal with diminishing light in the afternoon back there. I set the camera on manual, and used the flash to help with the lower ISO, but slower shutter speed also.

Finally, she came, but not the brightly colored male. Maybe tomorrow. I need a glass of wine after all that work.

Well done and have one on me. I love these birds but they are so hard to catch. I sit for hours when they are around trying to get them.

i have the same problem. Being the rookie that I am I started trying to get them hand held.NOT !!!so I got a tripod and set it up on my back patio and everytime I go near the camera they are gone . I actually had one that would peek around the feeder at me so I took a shot through the feeder. It is not the best shot but you can see him. I put out (3) 1 qt feeders during the peek times they are here and they drain them at least once a day. We get probably 25 to 30 at atime and it is crazy on the patio. It is an awesome air show.
