I have a canon 40D with a 24-105L lens & want to get a faster lens with with some reach. I have been looking at the 70-200 f/2.8 I do have a tripod & wanted to know if it is worth getting the IS ii. I know at some point I want to get a macro lens which info on that would also be appreciated. I was thinking of buying a used or refurbished, any thoughts on that.As for which I would buy 1st would depend on I see a great deal on the 70-200 or macro. I would like to stay in the L series lenses so when I upgrade the 40D body I would be set on lenses.....until I discover something else I want......we know we don't always buy what we need but more what we want,.

If you hand hold get the IS but if you always plan to use a tripod then get the non-IS.

If possible get the II, it is sharper but the original is still a hell of a lens. :thumbup:

I have the "original" non IS version of the 70-200 and it is fantastic. I have had it for 10+ years and the pictures are just as great today as when I first got the lens. "L" glass lenses are SO much better than the standard lenses; if you have never tried one, I would suggest renting one and you will be spoiled.

As far as macro - I have a very nice Sigma 105 macro and it has not disappointed yet. I have disappointed....but the lens has not!

I also shoot with the 40D (plus some of my film cameras when I feel nostalgic) and am considering the new 6D. I miss full frame photography. All of my lenses (about 10 or 12) are full frame with the exception of the one that came with the 40D.

if you plan to use Canon 70-200 f2.8 on a tripode.. why not look at the Canon 70-200 f4.0 IS. price is about half, IQ is almost as good and in a pinch, you have the IS for handheld shots.

I use the f4.0 IS for HS indoor BB games, with IS) at 2000, good enough pics for local paper and up to 8x10 not bad. The IQ is outstanding quality... on Canon 7d...

Great deals can be had on used lenses. I never buy the most recent upgrade. I always skip a generation or wait until a new model is about to be released and then buy a used item from someone else that just has to have the newest.

I think you'll be happy with any of the 70-200's. Buy the one that fits your budget.

Thank you rhc ....grand kids play basketball & volleyball indoors & there are time tripods are not allowed which is why I was considering the f/2.8. I think if I find a great deal on a used pristine 2.8 I may go that way but sometimes it's all about the $$$$ thanks for your info

Sorry to change the subject just slightly, but what is "IQ"?

When I was growing up back in the day it was "Intelligence Quotience" (sp?) What does it mean in the digital world? I am an old school film guy and still struggle with digital. I have quite a few memory cards with images on them and have no idea how to get them on my computer....pretty sad, huh?

Hi, I have the 70-200mm 2.8 w/o the IS. I use it for lots of things but shooting sports doesn't need it. I put my camera on a monopod for shooting my grandkids. I don't miss the IS and for me it isn't worth the extra money. I do hope you get a monopod though as I think you'll find it works really well as that is a great lens but it's heavy.
