Hello I am a new photographer with a used Canon EOS 300D Rebel Digital. when I take a picture Half of the LCD panel is black and half of the picture don't take. Any suggestions?
are you using a flash, and or a lens hood?..is your hand out of the way?..just hard to say what the problem might be, could be some setting,,try the manual if all else fails.
I hope I'm wrong but your LCD screen may be gone

There could be two different problems here. If the LCD is dark on the bottom, but the PICTURE ITSELF is OK, then the LCD screen is bad. If the LCD is dark, and the picture is dark as well, as you say, you have a sensor problem. Or there's a whacking big piece of dust on the mirror. Or you had your thumb in front of the lens. Suggestion? Take your camera to a camera shop and ask them to take a look at it. (Resist their efforts to sell you a replacement 1DS, however...:)
if you use a flash, maybe the shutter speed is not set properly. why not call canon at 800 - 828 4040. they are really quite helpful.
Looks like you are in flash mode set to rear? synch..check flash settings..as aaron said and read that manual..flash is a whole new area..try taking a picture in auto mode..and see what happens..if ok then adjust you flash mode..
I've been racking my brain about this, as I had a similar problem on my first DSLR, a Rebel XT, a.k.a 350D, and I think I finally remembered why your picture looked so familiar; my camera made similar images. In my case, the focusing mirror malfunctioned and would only go part way up. As I remember, the image that hits the sensor is inverted, which would be why the top of the image would be visible and not the bottom. The black shadow is from the mirror which is blocking the bottom portion of the image that is coming from the lens. Mine was under warranty, so I don't know what it cost to have it fixed, but it would probably be more than the camera is worth, unfortunately.
Have to agree - this looks like a shutter or mirror problem - the sensor failure would not likely be so regular, nor an LCD failure. Stupid question - What type of lens cap ? an auto-retract on a P&S does this, too.
Well thank you all for the help just wanted to let you know that the camera is dead, yes sadly enough. I took the advise of I very nice person and with his suggestions I look a look and oh me oh my. We have to bury the Canon the Mirror was cracked a little and the shutter well it look like a pin was bent. The camera was given to me, all it did was make me spoiled. Even though it was old it was better than the one I had and I really like it. So the funeral will be a 9pm tonight. After the Farristown "Flyers vs. Estill "Engineers" football game. Looks like digital video. Thank y'all. Marlo
P.S. Go Flyers!!!!!
my condolences..sorry I won't be able to attend the services..
