Every autumn, my son and I travel to the Allecheny Mountains in northcentral Pa. to see the elk during the rutting season and take pictures. These were taken at the Hicks Run Viewing Area in Cameron County. (
http://www.visitpa.com/hicks-run-viewing-area)
In these pics, the distance from the viewing area to where the elk were feeding in the food plot is ~150-yds. At that distance, the FOV at 400mm is wide. Its even wider at 100mm. I decided to crop these as a Panorama. It seems like it worked out. What do you think?
I was using a Canon EOS 50D w/EF 100-400mm L lens; Av @ f5.6; ISO 800. I shot HH with the lens supported on my rifle bipod. Exif intact. PP w/PSE8.
Enjoy these, and as usual, comments welcome.

Nice images Gene, I live just north of Potter and McKane counties in NY. I cross the stateline often and have yet to see the magnificent critters. Thank you for sharing your images

They are awesome Gene. Does the son get into it like you? That must be so great to have your son along and really be part of your life. Thanks again for sharing these beautiful places with us!!!

Glad you like them, Erv. My son takes pictures, hands me the memory card, and I PP them. We go together when out looking for eagles and elk. In Elk Country, he goes back into the wilds while I stay in the civilized area -- old legs. We stay in contact via walkie-talkie, and I get reports on what he's seeing and what he has called in. I get to see them on the pics. He scares the heck out of me when I'm with him and he calls them in so close you can see their eye lashes and their bugling is deafening (see
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-51444-1.html), but its fun.
Glad you like these and thanks for looking. -- Gene

Sounds like fun Gene. I would love to see him call them in. My big trill here is calling in Crows and Fox. :):) The fox are at night, so not much for pictures. But it is fun to see them.

Erv, its loads of fun! We make our rounds of the normal "tourist" viewing areas to see what's moving about, then we head for the wild area where you rarely bump into anyone, if ever. There's where it gets to be fun. He worked a very large bull (then can be as much as 800 lbs.) for about an hour last October and finally got him into camera range but there wasn't enough light for any good shots. I'll see what I can find in the vault and if I can PP them OK then I'll post. -- Gene

Thank you, Blake. These were taken in Cameron Co. near Driftwood which is southwest of Potter Co. Most of what we see are in Elk Co. near Benezette. I know there are elk in Potter but they're scattered. Thanks for looking.

Nice GeneM,
Cameron County is where I will be within the next couple months. House is right before sizerville state park.
If the cabin is done maybe we can hook you up. The Buttonwood is always good too!
Thats where just recently I sat and watched an eagle for over an hour.
   awesome shots, thanks for them

Thanks. I'll keep it in mind. I've spent that much and more watching eagles. Interesting birds. Thanks for looking.
